The Middlebury volleyball team opened its three-match weekend with a 3-1 loss to Scranton on Friday evening in Pennsylvania.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Royals started strong, claiming 12 of the first 17 points to build a 12-5 lead. Gwen Koester led the charge with three kills in the span.
- Devin McCormack helped trim Scranton's advantage to five (15-10) with two successful attacks as part of three of the next four tallies for Middlebury.
- The Panthers could not close the gap further, as a kill by Danielle Kramer sealed the first set for the Royals, 25-16.
- Both teams jockeyed for position in the second stanza. Gabby Pribisich (three kills) and Deanna Whelpley (two kills) paced the attack for each side as Scranton held a slim 11-10 edge.
- Middlebury battled back to earn its first lead of the set via a Royals attack error, 17-16.
- The Panthers clamped down towards the end of the frame. A block by Molly MacDonald and Ava Tuccio capped nine of 14 points for the visitors to grab the second stanza at 25-21 and tie the match, 1-1.
- Scranton pulled ahead to begin the third set, using two successful attacks by Whelpley and a block from Erin Gretsky and Kramer for an 8-3 advantage and forcing a Panther timeout.
- Middlebury chipped away at the deficit. A kill from Caroline Byrne ended a 10-6 burst to put the Panthers within one at 14-13.
- Neither side gave an inch until a successful attack by Gwen Koester sparked a 6-1 run that allowed the Royals to pull away for a 25-19 win.
- With the score 5-4 in the fourth, a kill by Kramer and a Panther attack error bookended a quick 6-2 burst to put Scranton up by five (11-6).
- Molly Harrison brought a jolt to the Panther attack with consecutive successful strikes, trimming the deficit to 16-14.
- Middlebury continued to fight until the end, but a Whelpley kill gave the hosts a 25-22 set triumph and the 3-1 match victory.
NOTES
- Harrison led the Panther attack with 16 kills, becoming the 11th player in program history with 800 or more successful attacks.
- Bryne tallied her third double-double in the last four matches with 10 kills and a career-best 17 digs.
- Campbell Bartley dished out 40 assists, marking a new best in a Panther uniform.
- This match marked the first meeting between Middlebury and Scranton in volleyball.
The Panthers return to the court on Saturday to conclude the Scranton Invitational, facing Cortland at 1:30 p.m. before taking on Salisbury at 4:00 p.m.
