#4 Women’s Tennis Advances To NESCAC Championship With 4-1 Win Over #13 Amherst

The #4/top-seeded Middlebury women's tennis team tallied a 4-1 win over #13/fourth-seeded Amherst on Saturday in the NESCAC Semifinals. With the victory, the Panthers advance to the NESCAC Championship on Sunday.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mammoth team of Lily Dounchis and Deliala Friedman took the first doubles match 6-2 at #1 before the Panther duo of Claudia Miller and Elsie Van Wieren won their match 7-6 (9-7) in the second spot. In the deciding match, Nathalie van der Reis and Lulu Wu clinched the doubles point for Middlebury with a 7-6 (7-2) victory #3 for a 1-0 advantage. 
  • During singles play, Miller defeated her opponent at #3 in straight sets by scores of 6-2, 6-3 to put the Panthers up 2-0.
  • The lone point for Amherst came at #4, when Sophie Diop won 6-4, 6-3 to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • In the fifth spot, van der Reis claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tina She to put Middlebury on the brink.
  • Clinching the match was Nina Farhat, who defeated Cody Huang 6-4, 6-4 in the sixth spot to for the final 4-1 decision.
NOTES
  • At the time of clinching, Sahana Raman (#1) and Lily Douchnis split the first two sets, headed to the third set, while Van Wieren (#2) was up 1-0 and held a 5-4 edge in the second set. 
  • The Panthers increased their winning streak to 11-straight matches.
  • Middlebury and Amherst met for the 55th time, with the Panthers claiming 15 of the last 16 meetings with the Mammoths.
Middlebury will face #6/second-seeded Wesleyan on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in the title match.
