#4 Women’s Tennis Captures Program’s First NESCAC Championship

The #4/top-seeded Middlebury women's tennis team captured the program's first NESCAC Championship with a resounding 4-1 victory over four-time reigning champion #5/second-seeded Wesleyan. The Panthers become the fourth team in league history to hoist the trophy.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Knotted at 1-1 in the top spot, the Middlebury pair of Nina Farhat and Sahana Raman claimed five-straight games to ease to the 6-1 triumph.
  • Claudia Miller and Elsie Van Wieren were tied twice before the duo took a commanding 5-2 lead. The Wesleyan pair of Maria Natalia Leroy Garibay and Jacqueline Soloveychik cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Panther pair was able to tally the next game to clinch the doubles point.
  • Raman carried the momentum into singles, claiming a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the top spot to give Middlebury a 2-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals cut the deficit in half (2-1) when Lane Durkin earned each set by 6-4 scores at #2.
  • Nathalie van der Reis took care of business in the fifth slot, picking up a pair of 6-2, 6-1 triumph to increase the Panther advantage to 3-1.
  • Farhat clinched the title with a tightly contested battle at #6. She fell 6-1 in the opening set, but dug deep and claimed 6-1, 6-4 victories to secure the 4-1 win. 
NOTES
  • Middlebury and Wesleyan met for the fourth time in the title bout and third in the last four years. The programs played for the 35th time overall with the Panthers claiming their 25th triumph.
  • At the time of clinching, duo van der Reis and Lulu Wu were ahead 4-3 at #3, and Miller (#3) and Wu (#3) had split their sets in singles action.
  • Miller earned her 80th career doubles win.
Middlebury earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will learn its opponent and location when the bracket is revealed on Monday, May 5.
