Middlebury Drops NESCAC Twinbill To Wesleyan

The Middlebury softball team fell in its final regular-season action to Wesleyan on Saturday. The Panthers dropped a 10-0 decision in five innings during the opener and a 5-3 result in game two.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Wesleyan grabbed a 1-0 edge in the first with an RBI single to right field by Isabella Secaira-Cotto.
  • Secaira-Cotto pushed the Cardinal lead to 4-0 with a bases-clearing triple to right-center field. She later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to build the advantage to 5-0.
  • Wesleyan added to its cushion in the next stanza, tallying four runs. Jordynn Killion and Sam Chappell highlighted the surge with run-scoring base knocks.
  • Jennifer Westphal opened the fourth with a walk and later made it to third on a wild pitch and a groundout. Abby Orso worked a strikeout and an out on the ground to keep the Panthers off the board.
  • Wesleyan closed the scoring in the bottom half of the stanza with Secaira-Cotto scoring on a wild pitch for the 10-0 final score.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • Wesleyan tallied two unearned runs in the initial frame to grab a 2-0 lead.
  • During the second inning, the Panthers put runners in scoring position with two outs, but could not push anyone across.
  • Middlebury's offense came alive in the top of the sixth. Westphal, Olivia Scholes and Olivia Fleming ripped off three-consecutive singles to load the bases. After a fielder's choice, Caitlin Stanley plated Scholes with a sacrifice fly to right to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • The Panthers were not finished in the inning. Pinch hitter Olivia Schultz smacked an RBI double to left field for a 3-2 advantage.
  • The Cardinals battled back during the bottom half. With two outs, the hosts tallied three-straight base knocks and had three runners cross home plate to secure the 5-3 win.
NOTES
  • Schultz had a team-high two runs batted in over the doubleheader.
  • Kristyn Carroll's walk during game two puts her one behind the single-season program mark of 25.
  • The programs met for the 65th and 66th times.
  • Both teams wore sunflower stickers during the contest to honor Jenna Putala, a Wesleyan alumna and current assistant softball coach at Babson, who is battling a rare form of sarcoma.
The conference office will release the seedings for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament later this evening.
