#4 Panthers Open NESCAC Tournament With 4-0 Win Over Hamilton

The #4/top-seeded Middlebury women's tennis team tallied a 4-0 sweep over eighth-seeded Hamilton in NESCAC Quarterfinal action. With the win, the Panthers advance to the semifinal round on Saturday. 

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury quickly grabbed the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Tandem Nathalie van der Reis and Lulu Wu secured a 6-0 win, while the duo of Claudia Miller and Elise Van Wieren earned a 6-1 victory in the second position.
  • At #6, Charlotte McCann cruised past Hannah Walpole in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to give Middlebury a 2-0 advantage.
  • Farhat claimed the opening four games of the initial set in the fifth slot before Hamilton's Grace Qian won four of the ensuing five to pull within one (5-4). The Panther was victorious in the 10th game for the 6-4 triumph. The second set saw Farhat race out to a 5-0 lead on her way to a 6-4, 6-2 decision to put Middlebury on the doorstep.
  • In the top slot, Raman clinched the match with a marathon win over Hannah Aspey. Raman breezed in the opening set 6-1. The second stanza saw the Panther move out to a 4-2 advantage before Aspey leveled the set at 6-6. Tied at 2-2 in the tiebreaker, Aspey won five-straight points to send the match to a decisive set. The players split the initial two games in the final set before Raman pulled away for the 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-2 victory and the 4-0 Middlebury decision.

NOTES

  • At the time of the clinching, Van Wieren (#2) and Miller (#3) had won their opening sets, while Van Wieren was ahead 2-1 in the second. The match at #4 singles between Wu and Hamilton's Shannon Cicero hadn't started.
  • Raman's triumph was her eighth-straight singles win. 
  • Middlebury increased its winning streak to 10-straight matches.
  • The Panthers and Continentals squared off for the 14th time, with Middlebury winning each contest. This marked the first meeting between the programs in the NESCAC Tournament. 

Middlebury will face #13 Amherst on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with a berth to the championship on the line.
