#2 Women’s Lacrosse Downs UChicago 23-6 in Third-Round Action

The second-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team rattled off an 11-1 run in the opening stanza en route to a 23-6 victory over #21 University of Chicago (UChicago) in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the scoring at the 12:17 mark with a quick-stick strike from Anna Spehr on a nice dish from Caroline Adams
  • Middlebury tallied six consecutive markers following the opening goal as back-to-back bouncing free-position scores from Hope Shue and Kelcey Dion sparked the run. Shue closed out the span with a pair of goals to complete her early hat trick and give the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 6:16 to go.
  • The Maroons got on the board with 4:50 left on the clock as Evelina Swigart rifled a shot from the top of the arc.
  • Adams answered just 43 seconds later to start a four-goal spurt, highlighted by a pair of player-down markers, for the 11-1 advantage and running time heading into the second stanza.
  • After Middlebury goalie Elizabeth Savage denied an attempt by UChicago on a free-position chance, the Panthers raced down the field and Maddie Ackerman deposited a shot to make it 12-1 at the 12:34 mark.
  • Maggie Coughlin followed with a wrap-around tally for the 13-1 lead.
  • The Maroons took advantage of an extra player at the 6:39 mark as Jill Hoey found the upper-left corner while sandwiched between a pair of defenders.
  • Jamee Numan answered with 4:38 to go, before Britt Nawrocki rifled back-to-back bids into the goal for the 16-2 lead at intermission.
  • Middlebury tallied three of the four markers in the third stanza, with Nawrocki, Maeve Lee and Burdine Atherton contributing to the scoring column to make it 19-3.
  • Lee converted a free-position tally out of the break, as the teams traded the seven goals in the final frame for the 22-6 Panther victory.

  • With five points (4G, 1A) in today's triumph, Shue moves into a tie for fourth place on Middlebury's single-season list with 99, while ranking sixth with 71 goals this spring. She also caused four turnovers, scooped up four groundballs and won three draw controls.
  • Nawrocki tallied a career-high three goals during the win.
  • With a pair of goals today, Dion now has 100 in her career.
  • Middlebury and UChicago met for the second time, with the Panthers claiming the 2022 meeting in the same round of the tournament by a 22-4 score.
