The 14th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team faced St. Lawrence in a back-and-forth snowy affair in Upstate New York on Tuesday. The Panthers scored with 7:46 remaining to cut the deficit to one (7-6), but the Saints hung on in the low-scoring final frame. With one assist during the game,
Billy Curtis became the program's career record holder with 130, resetting a mark that had remained untouched since 1983.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers opened the scoring at the 9:39 mark when Curtis came from behind the goal and fed Patrick Jamin for a quick-stick tally.
- St. Lawrence responded nearly three minutes later when Ethan Friedberg slipped the ball into the right panel on a dish from Jamie Rozenweig for the 1-1 score.
- Middlebury answered with consecutive markers to close out the quarter with a 3-1 lead. Russell Thorndike bounced in a goal with 3:59 to go, before Finn McCarthy tucked the ball inside the left pipe with 16 ticks left.
- The Saints sliced the advantage to one (3-2) with 40 seconds off the clock to start the second stanza. Daniel Mahoney split a pair of defenders and deposited a cross-body shot into the goal.
- The Panthers responded with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. Curtis tucked the ball into the right panel and Cooper DeMallie surprised goalie Michael Marinello with a tally from between two defenders for the 5-2 lead.
- St. Lawrence had the final word of the half as Mahoney's diving shot snuck by goaltender Hayden Kern, making it 5-3 at the break.
- Mahoney picked up where he left off to start the third, completing his hat trick at the 13:22 mark after scooping up a loose ball and swiping nylon. The Saints tacked on tallies from David Herlihy and another from Mahoney to take their first lead (6-5) with one quarter to go.
- With 13:46 remaining in the final frame, Cam Croasdaile rifled a shot into the goal to give St. Lawrence a two-goal cushion (7-5).
- Following a nice save by Kern, Middlebury's Will Spehr raced down the field to clear the ball and flipped a quick pass to Jamin, who made a move to beat Marinello and slice the lead to 7-6.
- The Panthers had a final chance to tie the game with 32 seconds left, but Curtis' attempt was thwarted by Marinello as the Saints hung on for the 7-6 triumph.
NOTES
