Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Late Charge Falls Short As #14 Panthers Drop 16-11 Contest To #1 Jumbos

The #14 Middlebury men's lacrosse team went on a 7-1 run over the final 18:45, but could not pull off the comeback in a 16-11 loss to top-ranked Tufts on Saturday. During the contest, William Munroe vaulted to the top of the program record book in faceoff victories with 758.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Jack Regnery opened the scoring with 8:12 remaining in the opening stanza, cutting to the right and firing a cross-body shot into the left panel for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Jumbos tallied four more goals to build a 5-0 advantage after the opening 15 minutes. Regnery closed the run with a transition shot that skipped into the bottom right of the goal.
  • Middlebury started to chip away at the deficit. Cooper DeMallie grabbed a flip pass from Patrick Jamin and found the left panel just 47 seconds into the second stanza.
  • The momentum continued to sway in favor of the visitors, as Billy Curtis and Ryan McGloin each found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 11:57 left in the second.
  • Tufts roared back, ripping off a five-goal spurt over 6:25 of game action to rebuild its lead to 10-3.
  • The Panthers stopped the run with a tally from Will Ford at the 3:04 mark before Brooks Hauser earned his second goal for an 11-4 Jumbo's advantage at the half.
  • The hosts created another offensive swing to begin the third, scoring four-consecutive markers capped by a tally from goalie Ben Friedman to push its cushion to 15-4.
  • Middlebury answered again, as DeMallie secured his hat trick with back-to-back markers, before Ford sliced the lead to 15-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Panther wave continued to crash on the Jumbo defense to begin the final frame. Logan White ripped a shot that snuck inside the right post on a player-up opportunity to trim the lead to seven (15-8) with 10:20 left.
  • Tufts broke the scoring streak off the stick of Beau Keough, who scooped up the loose ball after an initial stop by goalie Hayden Kern, and bounced it over the line for a 16-8 score.
  • Middlebury put in one final surge. Ford, James Farinacci and Finn McCarthy each found the back of the net over 1:17 of action to pull the Panthers within five (16-11).
  • The visitors tested Friedman with two more shots over the final 4:10, but could not get any closer as the Jumbos held on for the victory.

NOTES

  • With his nine faceoff wins, Munroe surpasses the previous program mark of 755 set by Brian McGregor '03.
