The #19 Middlebury men's lacrosse team prevailed 13-9 in a back-and-forth battle with Trinity on Senior Day.
William Munroe scooped up eight groundballs during the win, setting a school record with 402 in his career.
Hayden Kern made seven saves to surpass 600 in his career.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Bantams jumped on the scoreboard at the 13:02 mark when Miles Harvey drove in with a defender on his back and whipped the ball into the goal from the 20-yard line.
- Will Ford gave Middlebury a 2-1 edge with back-to-back markers. He grabbed a pass from Billy Curtis on the left pipe and deposited a point-blank bid, before bouncing in a shot that trickled past goalie Jordan Opdahl.
- Trinity knotted the contest at 2-2 when Jay Ottomanelli dodged a defender and snuck a close-range shot inside the right pipe with 4:27 to go.
- Russell Thorndike found nylon with an over-the-shoulder marker for the 3-2 edge.
- The Bantams deadlocked the contest again with nine ticks left in the first. An initial bid was denied by goaltender Kern, but the deflection went right into the stick of Jake Connors, who scored instantaneously to make it 3-3.
- Rory McAloon gave Trinity a 4-3 edge at the 10:16 mark of the second stanza, burying his bid in the back of the goal after a lateral pass from Duncan Ride.
- Middlebury responded with markers from Patrick Jamin, Ford and Cooper DeMallie to take a 6-4 lead with 5:44 left in the half.
- The Bantams took advantage of a player-up situation as Bo Page used a quick stick to score. Harvey followed, rifling a shot from the 25-yard line to tie the game at six goals apiece.
- Curtis added a marker on each side of the break to give Middlebury an 8-6 edge.
- With 11:55 showing on the clock, Colin Sullivan made it a one-score game (8-7) with a blast from 25 yards out.
- Middlebury answered with four consecutive goals spanning the end of the third and start of the fourth stanza. Finn McCarthy got things going with a player-up tally, and Thorndike scored twice during the span. James Farinacci tallied the final goal of the third on a scoop-and-score as the team increased the lead to 12-7.
- Trinity would not go away, scoring twice to cut the deficit to three (12-9) on markers from Page and Harvey.
- Curtis secured the win with a nifty marker on a dish from Ford with 49 seconds to go for the 13-9 Panther triumph.
NOTES
- The previous career groundball record was set by Peter Mellen in 2007.
- Kern becomes the fifth player in program history with 600 or more career stops.
- With five points (3G, 2A) today, Curtis moves into second place in the record books with 240 in his career.
- The programs squared off for the 38th time with Middlebury holding a 34-4 advantage.
The Panthers close out the regular season at Williams on Wednesday with a 5:00 p.m. start.
