Fast Start Pushes #7 Men’s Tennis To 5-2 Victory At Colby

The seventh-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team grabbed three of Sunday's first four points and cruised to a 5-2 triumph over Colby. 

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Panthers quickly gained a 1-0 edge in doubles action. The duo of Neel Epstein and Hugh Hentschel claimed a 6-2 triumph at #2 while tandem Reif Larsen and Noah Lewis won 6-2 in the third spot to clinch the point.
  • Colby tied the score at 1-1 with a straight-set victory at #4 to begin singles play.
  • After dropping the opening frame, Laber rallied to defeat Jake Cohen (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) in the top slot to give the visitors a 2-1 edge.
  • Julian Wu followed with a 7-5, 7-5 decision at #2 to put Middlebury on the verge of clinching. 
  • Colby battled back as Josh Kaplan earned a three-set victory in the sixth spot to pull within 3-2.
  • Epstein secured the match with his 6-1, 6-4 decision at #3.
  • Hentschel sealed the 5-2 triumph in a straight-set victory in the fifth slot (6-1, 6-4).

NOTES

  • Hentschel posted his 20th career singles victory.
  • The Panthers tallied their 16th-consecutive win in the series against the Mules.

Middlebury returns to action next Sunday with a doubleheader. The squad hosts Connecticut College at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 4:00 p.m.
