Second-Half Surge Pushes #1 Panthers To 12-3 Victory Over Camels

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team outscored Connecticut College 7-1 over the second half to secure a 12-3 victory on Saturday from Peter Kohn Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Panthers opened the scoring with 13:09 remaining in the first quarter. Hope Shue zigzagged through three Camel defenders and finished inside the right panel for a 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury added another marker about two minutes later. After Kelcey Dion forced a turnover, Shue flew down the field and found a wide-open Caroline Adams for a tally to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Connecticut College answered off the ensuing draw, cutting the deficit to one (2-1) with 11:35 remaining. Greta Panke scooped up the loose ball and flipped it to Elizabeth Gill in front of the net, who slipped it underneath Panther goalie Gina Driscoll.
  • Middlebury regained a two-goal lead (3-1) to close the opening stanza with a free-position score by Sophia Lee.
  • With 6:41 left in the second quarter, Campbell Johnston blitzed in from the right side and finished high right to make the score 3-2.
  • The Panthers added tallies from Shue and Skylar Lach to take a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.
  • Connecticut College continued to battle to open the third. Emma Ognibene buried a free position goal into the left panel to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 5:51 remaining.
  • Middlebury took the momentum back again, as Shue and Maggie Coughlin each found the back of the net to build a 7-3 advantage through 45 minutes of action.
  • The Panther offense came to life in the final stanza off the stick of Anna Spehr, who tallied a natural hat trick to give the hosts a 10-3 lead with 3:00 minutes remaining.
  • Shue capped the scoring with two goals over 1:14 of action for the final 12-3 score.
