The Middlebury softball team closed its trip to the Sunshine State with victories over Wellesley (7-6) and Plattsburgh State (6-4) at THE Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. WELLESLEY
- The Panthers opened the scoring in the first inning with two outs. Uma Corcoran plated Olivia Scholes and Cate Viola with an RBI single up the middle for a 2-0 edge.
- Wellesley took the lead in the bottom half, highlighted by an RBI triple to right field by Anisa Rodriguez, to build a 4-2 advantage.
- Emily Ye cut the deficit to one (4-3) with a home run to center field an inning later.
- The Blue extended its lead back to a pair (5-3) on an RBI single up the middle from Brynne Mellady.
- In the top of the third, Corcoran tallied her third RBI of the contest, plating Scholes on a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 5-4 contest.
- Middlebury put together a rally in the fifth. Jennifer Westphal opened the frame with a double and advanced to third on a single to right from McKenna Lont. Corcoran came up clutch again, knocking in Westphal with her third hit of the contest to tie the game at 5-5.
- Wellesley gained the advantage back in the bottom half, as a Panther miscue allowed a run to score, pushing the Blue ahead by a 6-5 score.
- Middlebury took the lead for good in its next at-bat. With a runner on and two outs, Westphal tallied her second round tripper of the season over the center-field wall to give the Panthers a 7-6 edge.
- Wellesley sent the game-winning run to the plate in the seventh, but Ye forced a popout to second base to seal the victory.
HIGHLIGHTS VS PLATTSBURGH STATE
- Plattsburgh State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring groundout from Sara Isaacs and an RBI double by Bella Toleman.
- The Cardinals doubled their advantage a frame later, as Mikayla Manalo plated Michelle DeFina and Alyssa Hemingway with a single up the middle for a 4-0 score.
- Westphal tallied the first run for the Panthers in the home half by scampering home on a Plattsburgh State miscue.
- Middlebury continued to chip away at the deficit in the third. Viola recorded an RBI groundout and Scholes sent Carroll home on a sacrifice fly to left field to get within one (4-3).
- Carroll smacked a double through the left side of the infield in the fifth, scoring Olivia Fleming and Abigail Jankowski on the play for a 5-4 lead.Â
- A batter later, Viola sent Carroll home on a single up the middle to make the score 6-4.
- Lont, who relieved Jankowski in the top of the fifth, shut the Cardinal offense down over the final three innings to earn the save and push Middlebury's winning streak to five.
NOTES
- Corcoran, Lont, Westphal and Ye each had multi-hit games for Middlebury against Wellesley. Corcoran tallied a career-high four RBI in the victory over the Blue.
- Carroll led the offensive charge in game two, tallying two doubles and a pair of RBI.
- Lont earned her second career save in the triumph over Plattsburgh State.
- The Panthers recorded their fourth victory in the series against Wellesley.Â
Middlebury returns home to face Skidmore in a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
