Middlebury Edged By Emory In Series Finale 5-3

The Middlebury baseball team wrapped up a three-game weekend set against Emory on Sunday, falling by a 5-3 score in the series finale.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Aidan Conley doubled to right-center field and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Panthers responded in the top of the second. Ben Slaughter singled through the right side, followed by a double to right center from Brian Olson in his first career plate appearance. Aiden Han followed with a two-run base hit up the middle for a 2-1 advantage.
  • Emory answered with a pair of tallies in the bottom half of the frame. Zach Hanson reached on an error and scored on a triple from Jake Lawson to knot the score at 2-2. Lawson scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it a 3-2 contest.
  • In the home half of the third, Matthew Sicoli poked a leadoff single to left center and gave the Eagles a 4-2 advantage when he scored on a double to center off the base of the wall by Jack Halloran.
  • Middlebury put together a two-out rally in the sixth. Will Ashley drew a base on balls and Forrest Nelson scorched a pinch-hit single up the middle to put runners on first and second, but Eagle starting pitcher Adam Geller wiggled out of the jam to keep it a two-run contest.
  • The Panthers pulled within one (4-3) in the next frame. Olson started the inning with a double to left center, advanced to third on a single by Cooper Bohlig and raced home on a sacrifice fly from Carter Chi.
  • The Eagles regained the two-run advantage in the eighth when Nick Sullo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 5-3.
  • Middlebury made it interesting in the ninth when Han walked and Anthony Pellagrini singled through the left side with two outs. Emory reliever Bennett Speicher shut the door as Kyle McCausland flew out to deep left center to end the contest.
NOTES
  • Olson finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored in his first career game.
  • Han tied his career high with two runs batted in during the contest.
  • The programs played for the eighth time.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday when they open the home portion of their schedule against Colby-Sawyer at 2:30 p.m.
