The Middlebury softball program continued its spring break trip at THE Spring Game in sunny Clermont, Florida on Tuesday. The Panthers dropped an 8-5 decision to Framingham State before tallying an 11-4 victory over Knox College.
HIGHLIGHTS VS FRAMINGHAM STATE
- The Rams took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, headlined by an RBI double to left field by Eliza Carignan.
- Framingham State plated two more in the second on back-to-back singles from Abby Behrikis and Makayla Rooney for a 6-0 advantage.
- In the top of the third, Olivia Scholes cut the deficit to four (6-2) with a two-run homer to center field.
- The Rams added two tallies in the fifth with an RBI double to right-center field by Rooney and a flyout to right from Jocelyn Pepe to make it an 8-2 contest.Â
- The Panthers came roaring back in their final at-bats. Kelley Dever started the rally with a lead-off single through the left side and Caitlin Stanley was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Back at the top of the lineup, Carroll and Cate Viola tallied consecutive RBI singles, before Carroll later stole home to make the score 8-5.
- Scholes kept the hitting parade going with a single through the right side, bringing the game-tying run to the plate with no outs.
- Rams pitcher Audrey Gauthier shut the door, recording three consecutive strikeouts to clinch the 8-5 victory.
HIGHLIGHTS VS KNOX
- Middlebury kickstarted its offense in the bottom of the first, ripping off six runs to build a solid advantage. Viola, Jennifer Westphal, Emily Ye and Stanley each recorded a run batted in during the inning.
- The Panthers extended their lead in the second on a groundout by Ye and a wild pitch to make it an 8-0 ballgame.
- Knox found the scoreboard in the top of the third. Haylee Carpenter brought home Morgan Bean with a single through the right side and Maddie Poetzinger plated Kenzi Chandler with an RBI groundout for an 8-2 score.
- Middlebury answered with two more tallies in the bottom half. Mia Gilham pushed a run-scoring single up the middle and Westphal scored via a Prairie Fire miscue to push the lead to eight (10-2).
- In the fourth, Taylynn Kizer smoked a single to left-center field, plating Lauren O'Neill and Maddie Hicks to cut the deficit to six (10-4).
- Middlebury scored the final run of the contest on a Knox miscue for the final 11-4 decision.
NOTES
- Scholes launched her second homer of the season in a 3-for-4 effort against Framingham State.
- Gilham tallied her first hit in a Panther uniform
- Ye earned her second victory in the circle, striking out three batters over two innings against the Prairie Fire.
- Middlebury played Framingham State and Knox College for the first time in softball.Â
The Panthers continue their action in the Sunshine State with a Wednesday afternoon slate against Salem State (2:00 p.m.) and Nazareth (4:15 p.m.)
