#2 Women’s Ice Hockey Comes Up Short In Regular-Season Finale At Colby

The #2 Middlebury women's ice hockey team relinquished a pair of quick tallies in the second period, falling 2-0 at Colby in the regular-season finale. The Panthers finish with a 10-5-1 NESCAC mark and await the conference seeding announcement on Sunday for the upcoming tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mules had a good chance to score with 5:35 expired. Anna Staton rifled a shot from the top of the circles that netminder Sophia Will made a split save to deny. The rebound squirted all the way back out to just inside the blue line, but Staton's rebound attempt was blocked by Avery McInerny.
  • Midway through the stanza, Callia Ferraris looked to get Middlebury on the board. An initial wrister from the edge of the left faceoff circle was thwarted by goalie Mandy Busky with her stick. Ferraris collected the rebound and tested Busky again, but her attempt was turned aside by the goalie.
  • The Panthers looked to break through with 2:40 elapsed in the middle frame. Jordan Hower dug the puck out from the boards and found Ferraris who slipped a nice feed to Cat Appleyard. The one-timer by Appleyard from the doorstep looked destined to go in, but Busky stood tall and denied the chance.
  • Colby took a 1-0 edge at the 14:15 mark when Staton blasted a shot from just inside the blue line that snuck over the left shoulder of Will.
  • The goal sparked a momentum shift for the Mules, as the hosts found the back of the goal again less than two minutes later. Beth Sinson sent a backhanded pass to Anya Jiang in the slot, whose one-timer rippled nylon for the 2-0 lead.
  • Middlebury had a good chance to cut the deficit in half with 4:23 off the third-period clock. Cece Ziegler sent a pass from the defensive zone that sent Kate Flynn on a breakaway. The Panther barreled in and tried to tuck her shot inside the left pipe, but Busky was able to deny the attempt.
  • Middlebury pulled its netminder with 2:30 remaining in favor of the extra skater. The Panthers outshot the Mules 13-1 during the span but were unable to break through as Colby secured the 2-0 win.
NOTES
  • The teams played for the 68th time as Middlebury leads the series with 53 triumphs.
The Panthers have solidified a top-four seed in the upcoming tournament, and host a quarterfinal contest on Saturday with a time and opponent to be determined.
