Quinlan’s Overtime Goal Pushes #3 Panthers Past Ephs 2-1 in NESCAC Quarterfinals

With 5:07 expired in overtime, Kylie Quinlan rifled a shot from the right dot into the left corner of the goal to lift #3/second-seeded Middlebury past seventh-seeded Williams 2-1. With the win, the Panthers advance to the NESCAC Semifinals and take on #9/third-seeded Colby on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury had a good chance to get on the board with 3:44 elapsed. Avery McInerny sent a pass from behind the goal that Kate Flynn one-timed, but goalie Erin Pye snared the bid with her glove.
  • The Ephs looked to open the scoring at the 12:48 mark. Skyler Moore stole the puck near the blue line in the defensive zone and barreled down the ice. Moore smacked a shot on net, but netminder Sophia Merageas smothered the attempt.
  • The Panthers came out of the first intermission strong, with Quinlan ringing the left pipe from the top of the left faceoff circle with just 1:05 gone by.
  • Williams' best chance of the second frame came with 7:49 expired when Leah Rubinshteyn looked to tip-in an initial blast from Maddie Zack, but Merageas denied the attempt.
  • With just 38.8 ticks left on the clock while skating even, Cece Ziegler faked a defender and skated across the goal mouth. She looked destined to score, but an Eph hooked her to deny the attempt.
  • The Panthers took advantage of starting the third stanza on the power play, taking a 1-0 edge with 50 seconds off the clock. Olivia McManus grabbed the puck off a faceoff and found Flynn, who went bar-down from the left dot for the one-goal lead.
  • Jaelyn Keiver nearly knotted the game for Williams at the 8:51 mark. The Eph collected her own rebound after a blocked shot and sent the puck from the low slot. Merageas got a piece of her stick on the puck, allowing Sabrina Kim to clear it out of harm's way.
  • Over the ensuing seven minutes, Williams had a pair of slap shots from the tops of each circle that pinged off the crossbar.
  • The Ephs broke through with just 1:26 left in regulation. Lucie Bond redirected an initial blast by Claire Murphy from the left circle, deadlocking the contest 1-1 to force an extra session.
  • Middlebury came out strong to start overtime, with Kim wristing a shot from the slot that rang off Pye's facemask with 11 seconds off the clock.
  • The Panthers nearly scored with 2:58 expired. Ziegler's ripped in an initial attempt that was denied by Pye. Calia Ferraris snagged the rebound, testing the Williams' netminder from point-blank range, but Pye steered the bid aside.
  • Middlebury tallied the golden goal with 5:07 off the clock. Ferraris stole the puck from an Eph near the blue line and sent a beautiful cross-ice pass to Quinlan on the right dot. Quinlan finished the job, riffling her shot into the left side of the goal for the 2-1 victory.
NOTES
  • Merageas eclipsed the 30-saves plateau for the second time this season, recording 31 during the triumph.
  • The programs met for the third time this winter and the 93rd overall with the Panthers holding an 81-7-5 advantage.
Middlebury makes its 22nd NESCAC Semifinals appearance on Saturday, with a full preview to be released early next week.
