The Middlebury men's ice hockey team held a 3-2 lead headed into Friday's third period, but Amherst tallied five goals in the final stanza for a 7-3 decision.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mammoths opened the scoring with four minutes expired in the first period. Josh Burke ripped a shot from the top of the left circle over the right shoulder of netminder Andrew Heinze for a 1-0 lead.
- Amherst quickly increased its advantage at the 6:41 mark. Following a scrum in front of the goal, Vincent Velocci poked the loose puck over the line to make it a 2-0 contest.
- The Panthers attempted to get one back at 11:32 when Dante Palombo got the loose puck at the blue line and fired a shot on goal, but goalie Andrew Palena thwarted his bid.
- Ryan Pineault cut into the Mammoth lead with 8:09 remaining. His bid caromed off the boards and bounced off of an Amherst defender and into the goal to make it a 2-1 game.
- Ben Ritter looked to push the Mammoth advantage back to a pair with 28 ticks off the clock in the second stanza, but Heinze made the glove save.
- Andrew Seaman manufactured a quality chance, firing a shot from the faceoff dot that Palena got his blocker on with 7:04 remaining.
- Middlebury tied the game just over a minute later. Wyatt Pastor secured a loose puck and passed to Palombo in front of the net, who muscled a shot over Palena's left shoulder to even the score at 2-2 with 14:09 expired.
- Pastor skated into the zone and passed to Jack Silverman outside the crease. Silverman sliced a puck through Palena's legs for a 3-2 Panther lead with 1:11 remaining in the period.
- Amherst leveled the game at 3-3 just 1:01 into the third frame when Matt Toporowski fired from the right circle.
- Andrew Carmody gave the visitors the lead for good, ripping a shot from the point at the 5:23 mark for a 4-3 Mammoth advantage.
- Middlebury looked for the equalizer with 6:22 remaining off an attempt by Jin Lee, but Palena made a glove save on the chance.
- Ben Kuzma tallied a pair of goals with 7:07 and 3:48 showing on the clock, before the Mammoths sealed the game when Velocci added an empty-net score for a 7-3 Amherst win.
NOTES
- The programs squared off for the 95th time.
The Panthers wrap up the regular-season portion of their schedule tomorrow when they host #11 Hamilton at 3:00 p.m.
