Women’s Basketball Comes From Behind To Edge Hamilton 77-72

The Middlebury women's basketball team put together a 22-point output in the third quarter to come from behind and top Hamilton 77-72. Prior to the start of the contest, the team honored seniors Augusta Dixon, Katie Hollensteiner, Alexa Mustafaj, Leah Poorman and Kale Tornwini
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Continentals built a 7-2 lead on a fastbreak three from Althea Hill at the 7:33 mark. 
  • A pair of charity tosses from Mustafaj with 2:38 remaining cut the deficit to one (14-13). 
  • Hamilton responded with a 7-2 spurt capped on two free throws from Abbey Schwoebel for a 21-15 advantage with 50 seconds to go.
  • Middlebury closed out the stanza with four of the final six points to make it 23-19 at the end of the first.
  • The Continentals slowly increased their lead to open the second quarter, extending the advantage to eight (37-29) on a shot from beyond the arc by Sam Glickman at the 4:48 mark. 
  • Dixon sliced the deficit in half (38-34) with an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:08 left in the stanza. 
  • The game remained close in the final minutes of the half as Hamilton took a 43-37 lead heading into the locker room.
  • Trailing 48-39 at the 7:57 mark, the Panthers came alive, rattling off a 16-4 run over the ensuing 5:32. Mustafaj capped the span with a layup, giving Middlebury a 55-52 edge.
  • Hamilton tallied four of the next five points to knot the contest at 56 points apiece before Calie Messina sank a three with five ticks on the clock to push the home team ahead 59-56 heading into the fourth.
  • Ahead by two (66-64) at the 6:21 mark, the Panthers rattled off six unanswered points, only to have the Continentals return the favor with an 8-0 run to deadlock the contest at 72-72 with 1:08 remaining.
  • A jumper by Messina and a charity toss from Brooke Collins put Middlebury in front 75-72 with 12 ticks left on the clock. 
  • Following a Hamilton timeout and a missed three-pointer, the Continentals were forced to foul. Mustafaj stepped to the free throw line and sank both for the 77-72 win.
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Dixon recorded her 11th double-double of the season, tallying 20 points and pulling down 10 boards.
  • Mustafaj led all players with 28 points, while Messina had an all-around game with 14 points, seven boards, five assists, four steals and a pair of blocks.
  • The programs played for the 40th time with Middlebury claiming its 24th triumph against the Continentals.
With the triumph, the Panthers have secured a spot in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament with seedings to be announced on Sunday evening.
