The #10/second-seeded Middlebury field hockey team fell behind early in Saturday's NESCAC Quarterfinal action on Peter Kohn Field, but fought back and claimed an exciting 3-2 overtime win over #13/seventh-seed Bowdoin.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury looked to get on the scoreboard with 2:49 expired in the opening quarter. Hadley Crowther dribbled toward the goal from the right side, sending a bid that Polar Bear Melissa Shunk cleared just before it crossed the line for the defensive save.
- Bowdoin broke through at the 4:03 mark. Mackay Bommer tapped a bouncing ball inside the left post after an initial shot by Hannah Balmelli was saved by Panther goalie Izzy Redzic.
- Middlebury had its best chance of the initial stanza with 8:21 elapsed. Emma McNealy lifted a shot from close range that goalie Lauren O'Donald denied with her right pad.
- The hosts took advantage of a trio of penalty corners early in the second frame. On the third opportunity, a penalty stroke was awarded and Megan Fuqua buried the chance with 1:48 gone into the left side of the cage to knot the score at 1-1.
- Down two players during the late stages of the stanza, the Panther unit didn't allow a shot and sent the contest to the half tied.
- Middlebury took advantage of a penalty corner with 1:22 expired in the third stanza. Ellie Harrison, who was stationed on the left post, tipped in a pass from Fuqua for a 2-1 advantage.
- The Polar Bears evened the contest with 10:23 gone in the frame. An initial shot from the left by Maddie Mrva was saved by Redzic. The rebound popped to Fei Yang-Sady, who muscled the ball over the goal line for a 2-2 tally.
- Bowdoin came out three minutes into the fourth frame looking to grab the lead. A bid by Ella Davies was blocked before a rising attempt from Mvra was stopped by Redzic.
- The Panthers nearly scored a minute later on a ripped blast from a step inside the circle by Fuqua that scooted outside the post.
- With three minutes remaining in regulation, a knuckling attempt by Emily Ferguson whistled just wide of the left post to send the contest to overtime.
- The Polar Bears had their best opportunity in the extra frame at the 2:30 mark when on a shot on the left post by Ferguson. Redzic shuffled over and made the stop with her pads.
- Middlebury tallied the game-winning goal two minutes later. Crowther blitzed into the circle for a shot that was saved by O'Donald. Claire McMichael secured possession and had a bid stopped on the goal line by defender Lily Clifford. The Panther tried and succeeded on her second attempt, sending a looping shot just under the crossbar into the left side with 5:24 on the overtime clock for a 3-2 triumph.

- Fuqua's goal was her team-leading ninth of the fall.
- McMichael and Harrison added their third and second tallies, respectively.
- Redzic finished with five saves, giving her five or more in six contests this season.
- The programs met for the 60th time with the Panthers claiming their 31st triumph in the all-time series. The Panthers avenged a 2-1 shootout setback against the Polar Bears on October 4 and grabbed their seventh win over Bowdoin in the NESCAC Tournament.
Middlebury squares off with #6/third-seeded Bates on Saturday in the NESCAC Semifinals at Tufts at 1:30 p.m. The semifinal victors will play for the conference title on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
