Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Middlebury Eases Past Thomas 7-1

The Middlebury men's soccer team tallied the final seven goals of Sunday's match with Thomas en route to a 7-1 triumph over the Terriers.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The visitors jumped on the scoreboard with 1:18 elapsed in the opening half on a nifty give-and-go. Shafi Ibrahim and David Ivarsson passed the ball into the offensive zone before Ibrahim buried a shot into the bottom portion of the net for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers leveled the contest 11:34 later. Eduardo Casanova's initial bid from 10 yards was saved by Thomas goalie Jamie Fischer, but the bounding ball found the foot of Charlie Johnson who found space inside the left post.
  • Middlebury continued to apply pressure, grabbing the 2-1 lead in the 28th minute. Ben Shapiro sent a free kick into the box that Will Sawin redirected to Quinn Pappendick. The sophomore laced a right-footed attempt that tickled the twine with 17:20 left before halftime.
  • The hosts increased their advantage 8:15 later when Keagan Harder was fouled in the box. He stepped to the dot, burying his right-footed bid into the right side for a 3-1 edge.
  • The Terriers produced a quality chance three minutes before the break, but a header by Cody Robinson was caught by Panther goalie Joey Waterman to keep it a two-goal differential.
  • Middlebury posted its fourth tally 6:29 after the break on a corner kick. Casanova lofted the kick toward the opposite post, connecting with JT Federman for a header inside the left post and a 4-1 advantage.
  • Sawin gave the Panthers a four-goal lead (5-1) less than two minutes later, collecting a bouncing ball in the box and flicking a shot past a sprawling Fischer at the 55:13 mark.
  • Pappendick bent a beautiful left-footed blast from 18 yards that bounced off the left post and dipped into the top-left corner with 5:22 remaining, while Dylan Payne capped the scoring with 3:07 showing on the second-half clock via nifty feeds from Alex Perkin and Daniel Kaye for the final 7-1 result.
NOTES
  • Pappendick finished with a career-best two goals in the victory, while Casanova matched his best output in a Middlebury uniform with a pair of helpers.
  • Federman's tally was his initial score wearing the blue and white.
  • Shapiro, Perkin and Kaye each recorded their first assists of the season in the triumph.
  • Waterman tallied his 20th victory in front of the Panther net, improving to 20-3-5.
  • The programs met for the seventh time and first since 1988 with Middlebury holding a 6-0-1 advantage.
The Panthers return to competition on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when they travel to Colby for the Michael P. Russell '98 Memorial Match.
