The Middlebury men's soccer team rattled off three goals over 4:06 of first-half action to roll to a 4-0 victory at Colby on Saturday afternoon in the annual Michael P. Russell '98 Memorial Match.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Charlie Scott generated the initial chance for the hosts with 6:03 elapsed, delivering a bid from atop the penalty box that Panthers goalie Joey Waterman sprinted off his line to deny.
- Following a Middlebury free kick in the 12th minute, Colin Dugan dialed up an open look from 18 yards. Mules goalie Jackson Magee dove to his right to smother the attempt.
- Gavin Randolph had an excellent bid denied by defender Ryan Stewart with 16:00 left in the first half. Randolph aimed for the center of an open goal, but Stewart dashed inside and recorded the defensive save by deflecting the ball away.
- The Panthers etched their first tally with 31:36 expired. Dugan delivered a crisp attempt into the box that Randolph rattled up and in to push the Panthers ahead 1-0.
- Orlando Cavaceppi-Dove joined the scoring column in the 35th minute. Eduardo Casanova sent a low cross to Cavaceppi-Dove in the box, who guided the ball past a darting Magee and into the net for a 2-0 lead.
- The Middlebury surge continued with 9:18 on the first-half clock. Cavaceppi-Dove found Randolph amidst a quick transition for a one-on-one look with Magee. The midfielder tucked his bid in the lower-right corner for a 3-0 contest heading to the break.
- Leo Robison marked an attempt for the Mules with 53:20 elapsed, firing to the lower-left corner from 25 yards out. Waterman dropped to his right to make the save.
- The visitors kept the pressure on in the late minutes, forcing a pair of saves by Magee. The best opportunity came with 14:51 remaining when Keagan Harder sent a cross-field pass to an unmarked Dylan Payne. Magee dashed off his line to glove the shot immediately after Payne fired.
- The Panthers stopped the scoring with 87:30 gone. Anderson Gardner darted up the left side to the end line and sent a looping cross just over Magee's outstretched hand to Elias Androus for the tap into the lower-right portion of the net, finalizing the 4-0 decision.
NOTES
- Cavaceppi-Dove recorded his first career goal and helper in the win, while Androus tallied his initial marker as a Panther.
- Randolph added his first and second goals of the season.
- Waterman made five saves en route to his fourth clean sheet of the season.
- The programs squared off for the 44th time with Middlebury owning a 25-11-8 edge in the all-time series.
- The annual memorial match honors Russell, who helped the Panthers to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 1994-97 and passed away in 2011. Russell had siblings who attended both Middlebury and Colby, thus setting up the annual contest between the schools.
