Second-Half Blitz Sends Men’s Soccer Past #19 Williams 3-0

The Middlebury men's soccer team tallied three second-half goals to defeat #19 Williams 3-0 on Tuesday evening.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • With 11:43 expired, JJ Ruehlemann worked the ball in the box and fired a shot toward the right post. Ari Klayman turned his body and blocked the bid out of play.
  • Williams kept the pressure up in the 16th minute. Andrew Coelho got his head on a pass from Alex Bethencourt, but Panther goalie Joey Waterman dove to his right and corralled the save.
  • At the 24:01 mark, Antonio Cosentino stepped to a loose ball on the right side of the box and sent a pass that sailed toward the left post. Charlie Johnson rose for a header that Williams' goalie Aleix Anglada snagged out of the air.
  • The Panthers had a good look at the 33:47 mark. Ari Klayman placed a long throw into the box that glanced off the noggin of Pablo Gonzalez and over the top-right corner.
  • With 6:54 remaining in the first half, Harper Nicholl raced towards the box and cut to his left to create space. The forward laced a left-footed shot, but Anglada slid to the right to make the stop.
  • Coelho manufactured the first chance of the second half at the 46:20 mark, cutting left and firing a left-footed bid that sailed wide of the right post.
  • Middlebury broke through in the 51st minute. Hamin Kim sent a corner kick toward the right post. Will Sawin rose to the occasion and headed the ball into the lower right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
  • Jake Farmer nearly tied the contest at the 68:21 mark off a free kick, tapping a two-touch bid to the lower right corner that Waterman scooped up.
  • The Panthers added their second marker in the 77th minute. Gavin Randolph saved the ball on the Ephs' endline and guided it towards the right post. Nicholl won the race and tapped it in to make it 2-0.
  • Williams looked to cut the deficit with 10:03 remaining. Farmer headed a free kick that sailed up in the air in front of the goal line. Waterman tracked the falling ball and snagged it to keep the hosts off the board.
  • Middlebury wrapped up the scoring in the 86th minute. Keagan Harder ran the length of the field to grab possession before being taken down in the box for a penalty shot. The midfielder stepped to the dot and converted the bid down the center of the goal to seal the 3-0 victory.
