Men’s Soccer Knocks Off Third-Seeded Bowdoin, Advances to NESCAC Semifinals

The sixth-seeded Middlebury men's soccer team tallied two goals in the final 17 minutes of play to stun third-seeded Bowdoin in Saturday's NESCAC Quarterfinals, 2-1. With the triumph, the Panthers advance to Saturday's semifinals for the sixth-consecutive season.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • With 6:46 expired, Tyler Huck sent a quick cross on the endline toward the left post. Mateo Pacelli got enough of the ball for an attempt, but his bid sailed wide left.
  • Bowdoin manufactured another chance at the 10:47 mark. Max Cook settled the ball just inside the 18-yard box and fired, but Orlando Cavaceppi-Dove stepped in front of the shot to clear it away.
  • The hosts grabbed a 1-0 lead with 26:59 remaining in the first half. A Polar Bear free kick made its way into the Middlebury box and Jack Banks rose to flick the ball with his head to the left. Liam Myers timed his look and buried a cross-goal shot into the right side of the net.
  • Antonio Cosentino crafted the first solid chance for the Panthers in the 25th minute, sending a pass to the middle of the box. A darting Will Sawin rushed in for a header that Bowdoin goalie Alex Ainsworth corralled.
  • Sawin aided another chance less than a minute later, flipping a quick pass to Colin Dugan amidst a quick rush. Dugan fired a low-right bid that Ainsworth smothered.
  • With 16:42 left in the session, Cook secured a loose ball and delivered a strike that Middlebury goalie Joey Waterman sprinted off his line and deflected it with his body.
  • The Polar Bears nearly added a second score via a corner kick in the 40th minute. Kamar Burris-Khan perfectly placed the ball to Luke Peltz on the right post, who sent a strong chance off his forehead to the bottom-right corner. Waterman punched away the attempt with both hands to keep the game a one-goal contest.
  • With 59:49 elapsed, Dugan fired a shot from 25 yards away that hopped inches wide of the right post and out of play.
  • Middlebury knotted the game in the 74th minute. After a runout, Cavaceppi-Dove grabbed a loose ball and blitzed toward the middle of the field. The defender flipped a quick pass behind to a trailing Sawin, who tucked an attempt under Ainsworth into the center of the goal to make it 1-1.
  • The Panthers took a 2-1 lead seven minutes later. After a Bowdoin yellow card, Middlebury earned a free kick. Dugan stepped up and curled his bid into the top-left corner of the goal.
  • Bowdoin had the final two attempts in the 88th and 89th minutes, but Middlebury held strong to secure the upset and punch its ticket to the conference semifinals.
NOTES
  • Sawin netted his seventh goal of the season, extending his point streak to four-consecutive matches.
