Box Score The Middlebury men's soccer team recorded a pair of first-half goals and allowed just four shots on goal during Saturday's contest to retain the Hedley Reynolds Cup with a 2-0 victory over Bates.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers recorded their first chance with 1:49 expired in the opening half. Colin Dugan sent a long ball up the left sideline to a racing Gavin Randolph, whose attempt for the lower-left corner of the goal was saved by Bobcat goalie George Nassar.
- Bates placed a shot on target with 35:04 left in the opening half. Will Stillman stepped to a blocked shot and fired toward the bottom-right corner, but Middlebury goalie Joey Waterman pounced to his left for the stop.
- The hosts posted their first marker in the 20th minute. Eduardo Casanova split three Bobcats with a through ball that Will Sawin ran down near the boundary. With Nassar on his heels, Sawin flicked the ball backward to a waiting Randolph, who buried a bid in the bottom-left 90 to establish the 1-0 lead.
- Middlebury bolstered the lead with 26:23 gone. Randolph dashed to keep a long ball in play before sending a cross over to Sawin. The junior made the extra pass to a sprinting Dugan, whose attempt found the bottom-left corner to widen the margin, 2-0.
- With 14:42 to play in the half, Randolph found Charlie Johnson in the box for a header, but Nassar dove to his left to deny the chance.
- The visitors had their strongest opportunity of the session in the 39th minute. Walter Nelson fired a try from 20 yards that Waterman dove to his left to save.
- Lane Foushee forced a stop from Waterman with 52:21 elapsed, delivering a shot from just inside the penalty box that bounced off the Panther goalie's palms in the low center of the goal.
- The Panther defense stood tall with 24:11 remaining, blocking three Bobcat bids in 10 seconds following a corner kick to protect the clean sheet.
- Middlebury did not surrender a shot on goal in the final 24 minutes to lock down the 2-0 decision.

- Randolph recorded his second multi-point effort of the season, netting his third marker and second assist.
- Sawin logged his second multi-point showing in as many games with two helpers.
- Waterman made four saves to earn his fifth shutout of the campaign.
- The Panthers have posted five consecutive shutouts against the Bobcats dating back to the 2019 season. The program has not conceded over the last 503:04 of action in the series.
- The Hedley Reynolds Cup is named after Thomas Hedley Reynolds, who served in administrative roles at both Middlebury and Bates.
The Panthers conclude the regular season on the road against Williams on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
