The Middlebury women's basketball team fell behind early against St. Lawrence, and could not overcome the deficit despite a strong comeback bid, as the Saints claimed a 62-52 win.
HIGHLIGHTS
- A layup from Kale Tornwini in the first minute got things going for the Panthers, sparking a 7-4 spurt to open the contest.
- St. Lawrence responded with a 21-5 run to close out the first quarter, taking a 25-12 advantage on a charity toss from KJ Greenhalgh.
- The Saints continued to pull away in the second frame as a layup from Annie Perry with 1:28 left extended the lead to 41-19.
- Middlebury went four-for-four with free throws from Augusta Dixon and Calie Messina with under a minute to go to make it 41-23 at the break.
- Trailing 50-29 with 3:12 remaining in the third quarter, the Panthers went on a 7-2 burst, slicing the lead to 14 points (50-36) heading into the final session.
- Middlebury maintained its momentum, rattling off 13 of the initial 15 points over the opening 7:01. Keeley Baglio accounted for seven points during the span, as the Panthers cut the deficit to single digits (55-49).
- St. Lawrence answered with a 5-0 burst, taking a 60-49 advantage with 1:31 to go.
- An old-fashioned three-point play from Baglio with 26 ticks left on the clock made it 60-52, but that was as close as Middlebury would get.
- The Saints converted a pair of charity tosses in the waning seconds to secure the 62-52 triumph.
NOTES
- Dixon recorded her 25th career double-double and 10th of the season, leading all players with 12 boards alongside 11 points. The Panther also blocked a career-high six shots during the game, moving her into second all-time in the record books with 110.
- Catherine Carrafiello made her first career start, tallying five points, three assists and two rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
- Middlebury and St. Lawrence played for the 15th time.
The Panthers hit the road this weekend, traveling to Bates for a 2:00 p.m. Sunday contest.
