Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#1 Panthers Freeze Out #10 Polar Bears With 2-0 Triumph

The top-ranked Middlebury women's ice hockey team tallied a pair of second-period goals, blanking #10 Bowdoin 2-0. With the triumph, the Panthers handed a NESCAC team its first conference loss for the second-straight game as Middlebury upended #3 Amherst 3-1 last Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Friday's hosts nearly scored with 4:38 expired in the opening frame. Sabrina Kim sent a pass from center ice to Kylie Quinlan who cycled the puck behind the goal. Olivia Gordon skated toward the net with a head full of steam and one-timed a pass from Quinlan, but goalie Sarah Peterson thwarted the attempt.
  • With 1:51 remaining, Raia Schluter looked to get the Panthers on the board. Olivia McManus battled a pair of defenders and spun around to slide the puck to Schluter in the slot, but Schluter's bid was denied by Peterson as the teams skated into the locker room scoreless.
  • Bowdoin had a quality chance to score at the 8:24 mark of the second stanza when Kiley Briand lifted the puck from inside the blue line, but her floating shot hung in the air just long enough for netminder Sophia Merageas to use her blocker to deflect it away.
  • Middlebury took a 1-0 edge midway through the period. Cece Ziegler skated around the goal with the puck and sent a long pass to Emma Hannah at the top of the left faceoff circle. Hannah wound up and sent her shot flying toward the crease, before Quinlan redirected the bid into the net for the one-goal lead.
  • The Panthers nearly doubled their advantage with an extra skater at the 14:13 mark, but Cat Appleyard's attempt rang off the left pipe.
  • Less than a minute later, Middlebury cashed in on the power play. Kim fired a pass from behind the net that Kate Flynn shoveled through the five-hole for the 2-0 advantage.
  • The Polar Bears looked to cut the deficit in half with 50 seconds off the third-period clock while killing off a penalty. Luna Lu and Meghan Britt skated two-on-one as Lu dished a nice pass to Britt whose bid from just outside the right pipe rolled off the helmet of Merageas.
  • Midway through the frame, Bowdoin had another quality look but Bella Schifano's rebound attempt from between the circles was met by a strong stop from Merageas.
  • The Polar Bears pulled Peterson with 1:39 remaining in the contest, but a strong Panther defense did not allow a single shot from Bowdoin as Middlebury secured the 2-0 triumph.
NOTES
  • The programs played for the 80th time as the Panthers claimed their ninth-straight win over Bowdoin. During the current winning streak, Middlebury has outscored the Polar Bears 30-8.
  • Hannah made her collegiate debut count, dishing out an assist in her initial appearance in the navy and white.
  • This marked the Panther's sixth shutout of the season, with the squad outscoring opponents 49-11.
Middlebury and Bowdoin take to the ice again on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. puck drop in Chip Kenyon '85 Arena.
