#1 Women’s Hockey Splits Weekend With #10 Bowdoin

The #1 Middlebury women's ice hockey team split the weekend with #10 Bowdoin after falling 2-1 to the Polar Bears in the second contest of the series. The hosts claimed a 2-0 victory over Bowdoin on Friday night to share points.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked to get on the board early in the first period when Raia Schluter's shot from the point was denied by netminder Sarah Peterson. Avery McInerny picked up the rebound in front of the net, but Peterson thwarted the attempt with 4:02 expired.
  • Just 18 seconds later, the Polar Bears threatened to score. Meghan Britt skated into the Middlebury zone before her blast from the left faceoff circle was denied by goalie Sophia Will.
  • The Panther's best chance came with 6:43 left in the period. Olivia McManus ripped a shot from the point during a power play, but Peterson snagged the puck with her glove.
  • The Polar Bears got on the board with 1:01 remaining. An initial shot by Gia Massari was thwarted by Will, but Britt picked up the rebound on the left post and shoveled it into the goal to give Bowdoin the 1-0 advantage.
  • Meg Simon nearly tied the game with 2:21 expired in the second stanza with a shot from between the circles, but Peterson just got her body on the puck before it trickled over the line.
  • With 14:22 remaining, Olivia Gordon spun around in front of the goal before firing a shot on net that Peterson stopped.
  • The Panthers tied the game at 1-1 during a power play at the 5:26 mark. Sabrina Kim fed a pass over to Cat Appleyard who one-timed it from the top of the circle over Peterson's left shoulder.
  • Elizabeth Kent tried to give the lead back to the Polar Bears with 2:42 left in the period when she ripped a slap shot from the blue line, but Will made the blocker save as the teams skated into the break knotted at 1-1.
  • Middlebury created a two-on-one opportunity 2:07 into the third frame, but Peterson read the bang-bang play by Gordon and Kylie Quinlan.
  • Bowdoin took a 2-1 edge at the 16:21 mark while skating with an extra player. Luna Lu slid the puck over to Emma Merrill at the point, whose shot trickled through traffic and snuck over the pad of Will.
  • Will was pulled with 1:43 remaining in the game. The best opportunity for the Panthers came when Kim let a shot ring from between the circles with 10 seconds left, but Peterson was able to deny the attempt to secure the 2-1 win.
NOTES
  • Appleyard and Kim skated in their 100th career games.
  • With one assist today, Kim now has a career-high 16 on the season.
