Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

First Half Goal Leads Women’s Soccer Past Hamilton 1-0

The Middlebury women's soccer team scored in the first half, and hung on to top Hamilton 1-0 in the NESCAC opener. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers had a great chance to get on the board with 6:42 expired, but Carolyn Days' attempt was blocked by a Continental defender.
  • Middlebury threatened at the 19:55 mark, but Carolina Espinosa's shot that looked destined for the lower right corner was denied by goalie Nieve Tonna.
  • The Panthers broke through during the 38th minute, snagging a 1-0 edge. Stella Espinasse lifted her corner kick to the middle of the box where Sophia Cole volleyed the ball into the net.
  • Hamilton nearly knotted the game at the 52:03 mark, but Haley Cramer's shot towards the bottom left corner was thwarted by Sydney Poppinga.
  • The Continental's had another great chance with 58:06 expired, but netminder Carolyn Kelley punched Erin Rayhill's bid over the crossbar. 
  • Middlebury's Joely Virzi looked to double up the score during the 72nd minute, but Tonna was able to stop both opportunities, as the Panthers secured the 1-0 triumph.
 
NOTES
  • The programs squared off for the 24th time with Middlebury holding a 16-6-2 advantage in the all-time series.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday when they host Trinity at 11:00 am.
