Tied 10-10 at halftime, the Middlebury football team scored a touchdown in each of the final quarters en route to a 24-16 victory over Colby.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers got on the board with just 3:08 remaining in the opening stanza. Zach Levy booted a 44-yard field goal to give Middlebury a 3-0 edge.
- The Mules answered on their next possession, with Christos Tzoumakas converting a 33-yard field goal to knot the contest at 3-3.
- On the first drive of the second session, quarterback Aidan Moss came into the game on third-and-five. The Panther made no mistake, firing a 27-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Jamin before Levy increased the advantage to 10-3 with the extra point.
- With just under five minutes remaining in the half, Colby responded to tie the game at 10 points apiece. Declan McNamara had a 12-yard rushing touchdown and Tzoumakas' attempt was good.
- Starting at the Middlebury 43 yardline with 6:31 left in the third quarter, the Panthers made their way down the field. Brian Moran hooked up with Ethan Vashel for a 14-yard reception and Caleb Smith had a three-yard rush up the middle to put the squad in good scoring position. Moran found Vashel again, this time for a 40-yard scoring strike, before Levy split the uprights for the 17-10 lead.
- On the Panther's first drive of the final quarter, Jamin scampered for a 65-yard receiving touchdown, with Levy's extra point increasing the advantage to 24-10.
- Colby had the final word in the contest with a 13-play drive over the final 2:10, covering 69 yards. As the clock expired, Miles Drake threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Atticus Duncan that the officials ruled a touchdown for the 24-16 final score.
NOTES
- With 2.0 tackles for loss (TFL) today, Tomás Kenary broke the school record with 42.5 in his career. The previous mark of 41.5 TFL was set back in 2006. With 1.5 sacks for a loss of nine yards, the Panther also added to his pair of school marks, running his career sacks to 26.5 and sack yardage to 201.
- Jamin and Moran had a banner day on offense together. Jamin recorded career highs in receiving yards (113), touchdowns (two) and longest reception (65 yards). Moran tallied personal bests through the air (248 yards), longest pass (65 yards) and touchdown passes (two).
- Vashel recorded a career high of 103 receiving yards.
- Charlie Grant led the defense with a career-high 11 tackles (nine solo), while Shane Johnson also had a personal best tackles (eight).
- With one field goal today, Levy moves into a tie for fourth place with 15 on the career list.
- Behind his one sack in the contest, Dave Filias moved into fourth in the program record books with 14.5. He also had 13 yards in tackles for loss, propelling him into third all-time with 111 TFL yards for his career.
- Ty Brinkmann recorded 471 yards punting, which ranks second-best in a single game in the Middlebury record books. Four of his 11 punts landed inside the 20, with a long of 58 yards.
- The Panthers and the Mules played for the 60th time in a series dating back to 1936, with Middlebury claiming 12 of the last 13 meetings.
The Panthers hit the road next weekend, traveling to Amherst on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
