The Middlebury football team held off a comeback attempt by Amherst on Saturday, securing its third-straight win by a score of 29-21.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers came out strong with Tomás Kenary sacking quarterback Mason Marrow on third-and-10 to force the Mammoths to punt on their initial possession.
- On the next drive, Brian Moran found Mike Ahonen for a phenomenal one-handed, 32-yard catch to put Middlebury in position to score just two yards from the endzone. Amherst tried to stop the Panthers, but Moran and Patrick Jamin hooked up for a three-yard scoring strike and Zach Levy converted the extra point for the early 7-0 edge.
- With 1:31 remaining in the opening stanza, Levy booted a 30-yard field goal through the uprights to extend Middlebury's lead to 10-0.
- Tommy Schwartz intercepted Marrow's initial pass of the second quarter, returning it for 17 yards. When Moran took over, he tossed a 37-yarder to Ahonen before later connecting with Jeremy Kiefer for a six-yard touchdown. Levy's kick was good, making it 17-0.
- Later in the stanza, Charlie Grant intercepted a pass by Marrow, returning the ball 35 yards to the Amherst 10-yard line. The Mammoths held strong, as Levy split the uprights to increase the advantage to 20-0 at the halftime break.
- The third quarter belonged to Amherst as the squad cut the deficit down to six (20-14). The first came on a 10-play, 75-yard drive as Marrow secured a one-yard rushing touchdown and Hudson Fulcher tallied the PAT. After forcing Middlebury to punt on its next possession, Marrow found Owen Gaydos for a 34-yard reception before Marek Hill carried the football two yards into the endzone. Fulcher added the extra point to make it 20-14.
- On their first drive of the final frame, the Panthers made their way down the field before Moran connected with Jamin for an eight-yard touchdown reception. Levy secured the extra point, as Middlebury gained some breathing room (27-14).
- Despite having another pass picked off on the following possession, Marrow and the Mammoths did not back down. Later, Sam Gerber caught a 15-yard touchdown off the hands of Marrow and Fulcher split the uprights to cut the lead back down to six (27-21).
- Fulcher took an onside kick hoping to give Amherst a final chance, but Ollie Orvis pounced on the ball to recover it for Middlebury.
- The Mammoths forced the Panthers to punt, but an intentional grounding penalty was called on Marrow in the Amherst endzone, as Middlebury was awarded a safety to solidify the 29-21 win.
NOTES
- The Panthers snatched four interceptions during the contest, which is the most in a single game since 2019 and ties for second all-time.
- Ahonen had a season-high 110 receiving yards on seven receptions.
- With a pair of field goals, Levy moves into fourth place on Middlebury's all-time list with 17 in his career.
- Stola had one pass breakup, moving him into a three-way tie for most in a Panther career (23).
