Offense Drives #7 Women’s Soccer To 5-0 Victory Over VTSU Castleton

Five different Panthers recorded goals as the #7 Middlebury women's soccer team earned a 5-0 triumph over Vermont State University Castleton on Wednesday night. 

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Spartans best chance came at 4:49 of the opening half, as an attempt from 20 yards out by Lauren Fotter was tapped away by Middlebury goalie Frankie Marston.
  • The Panthers looked to get on the board at 20:44 when Stella Espinasse took a shot from 30 yards out that was punched away by Castleton goalie Emma Ezzo. 
  • Middlebury opened the scoring with 26:17 expired, as an Espinasse free kick deflected off of a Spartan defender's foot and went just past Ezzo's fingers.
  • The Panthers doubled their lead at 29:21 off a shot from Kiley Bertos, who settled a pass from Peyton Pettiford-Rowan and fired a shot that tucked just underneath the crossbar for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Middlebury created another chance in the 52nd minute, as an initial chance by Olivia O'Reilly was deflected away by Ezzo. Fanny Lodge grabbed the loose ball and put it in the net for her second tally of the season to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • O'Reilly earned her first goal of the season with 61:23 elapsed, blitzing past a Castleton defender and firing, giving  the Panthers a 4-0 edge with 61:23 elapsed.
  • Johanna Jenkins capped the scoring at the 88:28 mark with a shot from 25 yards out that sailed into the upper right corner of the goal to give Middlebury the 5-0 win. 
 
NOTES
  • Espinasse and Jenkins recorded their first career goals in Wednesday's victory
  • Marston recorded her initial career win and shutout in her first collegiate start.
  • The programs played for the 22nd time in a series in which the Panthers own a 20-1-1 advantage.
  • Middlebury has posted shutout wins in the last six contests and hasn't allowed a goal in the last 718:18 of action against the Spartans.
The Panthers return to NESCAC play Saturday when they host Connecticut College at 11:00 a.m.
