#9 Women’s Soccer Earns Scoreless Tie With #2 Amherst

The #9 Middlebury women's soccer team finished in a 0-0 draw with #2 Amherst in a battle between a pair of top-10 nationally ranked teams.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Mammoth goaltender Mika Fisher made a diving catch to smother Chloe Swindle's early attempt at 19:13 to keep the Panthers off the board. 
  • Middlebury threatened again just 38 seconds later, but an Amherst defender headed away Fanny Lodge's attempt. 
  • At the 38:02 mark, the Mammoth's looked to break the scoreless tie when Halle Hanna had a header chance, but goalie Sydney Poppinga made a diving save to deny Amherst.
  • Carolina Espinosa made a breaking attempt off of a pass from Joely Virzi at the 48:15 mark. Espinosa moved past two Amherst defenders, but Fisher thwarted her shot. 
  • Patience Kum looked for the golden goal for Amherst during the 54th minute, but Abby Ward came barreling in to block the shot, sending the ball over the crossbar. 
  • Poppinga made a clutch catching save when Brooke Ingemi's shot soared from outside the box at 59:25.
  • Minutes later, Amherst had its closest try when Abby Schwartz's shot off of the freekick bounced off of the crossbar with 68:05 into the game.
  • At the 82:30 mark, Poppinga made a sliding save off Schwartz's shot to keep her shutout intact. 
NOTES
  • For the second-consecutive game, Poppinga recorded nine saves, while also recording her ninth career shutout.
  • The programs played for the 46th time in a series where the Mammoths own a 21-15-10 advantage.
The Panthers remain on the road to close out their NESCAC weekend with an 11:00 am start at Wesleyan on Sunday.
