With 6:04 remaining in the contest,
Hugo Horwitz found the back of the net, helping the #2 Middlebury men's soccer team tie Amherst 1-1 in its first NESCAC game of the weekend.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mammoths wasted little time out of the gates, posting a flurry of chances during the opening minute after a corner kick. Ben Clark-Eden tested goalie Joey Waterman with back-to-back header attempts, but Waterman denied both.
- Amherst took a 1-0 edge at the 34:21 mark following a free kick from the right sideline by Mohammed Nuhu. Aidan Curtis flicked the ball into the air, Simon Kalinauskas headed it, and Fynn Hayton-Ruffner redirected the ball with his head into the upper left 90.
- The second half featured a tight physical battle that took place primarily in the middle of the field for the initial 15 minutes. Middlebury had a good chance to score with 27 minutes remaining, but Will Sawin's point-blank attempt was thwarted with a diving save from netminder Trey Sheppard.
- Middlebury knotted the score at 1-1 during the 83rd minute. Colin Dugan flicked the ball out to the right side where Ari Klayman was waiting to serve a beautiful cross into the box. Horwitz connected with his head, sending the ball into the right side of the goal to tie the game.
- With three minutes remaining, Tyler Payne nearly gave the Panthers the lead, but his attempt sailed just high of the upper right 90.
- Middlebury didn't let up, with a golden goal opportunity coming with just two ticks left on the clock. Horwitz had a volley toward the top left corner that sent Sheppard diving to his right, but the chance sailed just wide as the clock expired.
