The #2 Middlebury men's soccer team scored a pair of late second-half goals to earn a 2-0 victory at Endicott on Tuesday night. The Panthers improve to 5-0-0 on the year, highlighted by 14 different goal scorers.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury nearly got on the board with 8:50 elapsed. Kyle Nilsson made a move to beat a Gulls' defender and fired a shot on frame, but goalie Michael McDonough dove to his left to punch the ball away.
- During the 15th minute, Will Sawin rifled a shot from 25 yards out that McDonough got his fingers on to tip left of the pipe.
- Endicott had a quality opportunity at the 24:38 mark. Conor Rooney blasted the ball from the top of the 18, but his attempt veered just wide left of the pipe.
- With 31:12 expired, Middlebury had a shot that brought the bench and the stands to their feet. Gavin Randolph crossed the ball from the right side, before Keagan Harder redirected it with his head, sailing just wide left
- With just under 10 minutes left in the half, the Gulls put the Panther defense to the test. Endicott had three shots in quick succession, but the Middlebury defense stood tall as the teams headed into the break scoreless.
- During the 63rd minute, the Gulls looked to break the game open. Tiago Frazao sprinted down the field with the ball and slotted a pass to Sam Cochran between a pair of defenders. Cochran wound up and sent a great attempt on goal, but the ball whistled just wide left.
- With 72:43 elapsed, Randolph fired a shot that looked to graze the crossbar.
- The Panthers took advantage of an Endicott foul during the 78th minute. Eduardo Casanova served the free kick from the left sideline, before Ari Klayman flicked the ball with his head into the lower right corner for the 1-0 edge.
- Casanova didn't let up, scoring a tally of his own at the 85:06 mark. The Panther's hard shot ricocheted off a Gull and slipped past the outstretched hands of McDonough, trickling into goal to secure the 2-0 triumph.
NOTES
- This was the third-straight game that Casanova tallied at least one point, moving into the team lead with nine (3G, 3A).
- Klayman's marker was the first of his career in the navy and white.
- Middlebury and Endicott played for just the second time, with the Panthers improving to 2-0 in the series.
Middlebury finishes its busy road week with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Amherst on Saturday and a 12:00 p.m. kick off at Wesleyan the following day.
