#14 Women’s Soccer Finishes In 2-2 Draw With #4 MIT

The #14 Middlebury women's soccer team scored two goals in the first half, battling #4 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to a 2-2 tie.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Engineers looked to get on the board at the 14:59 mark, but Meagan Rowlett's blast toward the high center was denied by Sydney Poppinga who made a right-handed punching save over the crossbar.
  • The Panthers took a 1-0 edge with 18:01 expired. Mia Feldman shook an MIT defender on the left side and sent a pass to Abby Ward traveling down the left side of the box. Ward rifled her shot just past goaltender Ava Muffoletto into the far right corner for the one-goal Middlebury edge.
  • The Panthers increased the advantage at the 23:02 mark. Fanny Lodge sent a through ball to Feldman on the left wing. Feldman was able to beat an MIT defender and got her shot off when a second defender came barreling in on her. Muffoletto got a piece on the ball, but it wasn't enough as the strong shot fell to the right corner to give Middlebury a 2-0 lead.
  • The Panthers had another great chance with 27:24 expired. Muffoletto and Carolina Espinosa both fought for a cross sent into the box by Feldman. Espinosa knocked the ball out of Muffoletto's hands, but an Engineer defender cleared it off the goal line to keep the difference at two.
  • MIT had a quality opportunity to spoil the shutout with 36:08 off the clock. Ayla Sumer rifled a shot from the top of the box, but Poppinga made another punching save over the crossbar.
  • The Engineers broke through during the 49th minute. Rowlett blasted the ball into the upper right corner of the goal to cut the Panthers advantage to one (2-1).
  • MIT tied the game at the 64:19 mark following a corner kick from Maeve Sullivan. Madelyn Popilek redirected Sullivan's cross with her head, sneaking the ball past Poppinga to make it 2-2.
  • Both teams looked for the golden goal during the final minutes, but the defensive units stood strong as the teams ended in a 2-2 draw.
