Football Drops Season Opener to Wesleyan

The Middlebury football team dropped its season opener 43-7 to Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • On their second drive of the game, the Cardinals made their way down the field. Tyler Flynn broke through the defense, returning a 41-yard rushing touchdown to get Wesleyan on the board. Gage Hammond converted the extra point for the 7-0 edge with 10:05 showing on the clock. 
  • The Cardinals didn't let up, with Niko Candido finding Chase Wilson for a 66-yard touchdown reception. Hammond knocked the ball through the uprights for the 14-0 advantage. 
  • With 2:12 remaining in the opening stanza, Dylan Connors scooped up the ball after blocking the punt and returned it for a score, while Hammond tallied the extra point to make it 21-0.
  • Wesleyan continued its momentum in the second quarter, with Flynn sprinting into the endzone on a two-yard rush. Tomás Kenary batted down Hammond's PAT attempt to keep the difference at 27-0.
  • The Cardinals capped the half with a 25-yard field goal from Hammond for the 30-0 lead.
  • With 3:48 left in the third quarter, Candido hooked up with Rickey Eng for a 25-yard scoring strike. Hammond booted the ball through the uprights for the 37-0 advantage.
  • Middlebury spoiled the shutout with just 43 ticks left on the clock. The Panthers marched their way down the gridiron, before Brian Moran found Brendan Logan for a five-yard scoring strike. Zach Levy converted the extra point to cut the deficit to 37-7.
  • Wesleyan secured the triumph with a one-yard rushing touchdown from James McHugh for the 43-7 final.  
NOTES
  • With one blocked kick today, Kenary finds himself in a five-way tie for first place in the career record books with four.
  • Moran recorded a career-best 205 passing yards, while Ethan Vashel had a single-game high for receiving yards (58) and longest reception (41).
  • Middlebury and the Cardinals squared off for the 54th time, with the Panthers owning a slight edge (7-6) in the last 13 meetings. 
 
Middlebury hits the road next weekend, taking on Bowdoin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
