The #8/second-seeded Middlebury women's tennis team swept doubles, en route to a 5-1 victory over seventh-seeded Colby in NESCAC Quarterfinal action. With the win, the Panthers advance to the semifinal round on Saturday.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Tandem Nina Farhat and Lulu Wu grabbed the first point of the day at #3 doubles. The Panthers raced out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back en route to an 8-3 triumph.
- At #2, Gena Huang and Claudia Miller won six-straight games to start the set, but Mules' Sydney Landau and Isabella Suk turned up the pressure, cutting the deficit to just two (7-5). Huang and Miller dug in, claiming the final game for the 8-5 victory.
- Leading 6-2 at the top of the lineup, Amy Delman and Sahana Raman held off the Colby pair of Michaela Landry and Samantha Riordan to earn an 8-5 win and give Middlebury a 3-0 lead.
- Delman carried her momentum into singles play, taking a commanding 4-1 lead in the fifth spot. Landry slowly chipped away at the deficit, but Delman was able to secure the first set 6-3. That was all the Panther needed, shutting out Landry in the second set to put Middlebury up 4-0.
- Colby grabbed a point in the fourth slot with a 6-3, 6-2 win by Jade Finestone, making it 4-1.
- In the second spot, Wu dropped her initial set 6-4, but responded, claiming back-to-back victories (6-3, 6-0) to secure the match.
NOTES
- At the time of the clinching, both Miller (#3) and Charlotte McCann (#6) had claimed first-set triumphs via tiebreakers, but had fallen in their second sets. Raman was on the verge of grabbing the deciding point, splitting the initial sets by identical 6-4 scores, while being ahead 4-2 in the third when Wu sealed the victory.
- Delman's triumph was her eighth-straight singles win.
- The Panthers and the Mules squared off for the 29th time. This marked the third meeting between the programs in the NESCAC Quarterfinal round.
Middlebury will take on #13/third-seeded Amherst on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with a trip to the championship on the line.
