Box Score The #8/second-seeded Middlebury women's tennis team dropped a tight 5-4 decision to #13/third-seeded Amherst in NESCAC Semifinal action on Saturday.
HIGHLIGHTS
- In the third slot, Nathalie van der Reis and Lulu Wu raced out to a 7-0 start and never looked back en route to an 8-1 victory.
- Knotted at 5-5 in the second spot, the Mammoth pair of Amy Cui and Katelyn Hart topped Gena Huang and Claudia Miller 8-5 to knot the match at 1-1.
- Amherst grabbed the final doubles point in a tiebreaker at the top of the ladder with Lily Douchis and Deliala Friedman edging Amy Delman and Sahana Raman 7-3 to put the Mammoths up 2-1.
- Friedman carried the momentum into singles play, extending the Amherst lead to 3-1 with a straight-set victory in the top spot.
- Wu eased to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #2, before Miller claimed a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the third spot to level the contest at three wins apiece.
- In the sixth slot, van der Reis edged her opponent 6-4 before cruising to a 6-2 win to give Middlebury its first lead of the day (4-3).
- The Mammoths tied the match at 4-4 with a tight straight-set triumph ((6-3, 7-6(0)) in the fourth spot.
- The match was decided in the fifth slot. Delman triumphed 7-5 in the opening set, but fell 6-2, 6-3 as Amherst slipped past the Panthers 5-4.
NOTES
- Middlebury made its 22nd appearance in the NESCAC Tournament.
- The Panthers and the Mammoths played for the 55th time, with Amherst claiming its 30th win in the series.
- Wu grabbed her 40th career win and has triumphed in six-consecutive matches.
