#1 Panthers Punch Ticket To NCAA Semifinals With 16-1 Triumph Over #11 Sagehens

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team fell behind 1-0 after two minutes, but responded with 16 unanswered goals to cruise to a 16-1 victory over #11 Pomona-Pitzer. With the win, the Panthers secures a spot in the NCAA Semifinal round for the fifth-straight year.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Sagehens got on the board first, as Fiona Lewis found the back of the net early to give the visitors a 1-0 edge. 
  • Only 44 seconds later, the hosts evened the contest at 1-1 when Kate Motley bounced a free-position shot into the bottom right corner.
  • Motley struck again at the 9:23 mark, receiving a pass from Sara Ellinghaus and slotting the ball into the right corner for the 2-1 lead.
  • Middlebury took advantage of multiple player-up opportunities, as Susan Rowley and Hope Shue each netted tallies over the next 1:17 to extend the advantage to 4-1.
  • The hosts continued to pull away as Kelcey Dion, Rowley and Shue each scored over the remainder of the opening stanza to make it 7-1.
  • The Panthers picked up where they left off to begin the second quarter. Rowley rattled off four-consecutive goals, including three on the player-up advantage, putting the game out of reach (11-1) after just five minutes of play.
  • With 5:59 to go, Jamee Numan capped the first-half scoring, firing a free-position shot into the bottom-left corner for the 12-1 halftime advantage.
  • Middlebury's defense continued to stifle Pomona-Pitzer in the third frame. Motley recorded her hat trick with 5:23 elapsed, before Caroline Adams found the back of the net with 14 seconds to go, making it 14-1. 
  • Numan extended the lead to 15-1 when she drove to the net and flipped a shot that just slipped past Sagehen goalie Ruby Loesch with 4:46 elapsed.
  • With 2:53 left in the contest, Burdine Atherton found Maddie Ackerman who cut through multiple defenders and tucked her shot into the net for her first career goal and the 16-1 final score. 
NOTES
  • Shue tallied two goals during the win, giving her 100 points for the season (75G, 25A). With her two markers, the attacker moves into third all-time in the Middlebury single season record books in both points and goals.
  • Rowley's seven points (6G, 1A) matched her season-high.
  • Kylie Wilson caused two turnovers during today's contest, giving her 86 for her career which is fifth in program history.
  • With the victory, the Panthers have won 49-consecutive contests and scored double-digits in each of those games. 
  • Middlebury has also won 28-straight games at Peter Kohn Field.
  • The two programs met for the first time ever in women's lacrosse.

The Panthers advance to the NCAA Semifinal round and will #3 Franklin & Marshall on Friday at Kerr Stadium in Salem, Virginia.
