Baseball Holds Off St. John Fisher 9-8 In Extra Innings

The Middlebury baseball team earned a hard-fought, back-and-forth 9-8 triumph over St. John Fisher in extra innings on Saturday evening to continue its run in the NCAA Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers wasted little time, opening the scoring in the top of the first. Beau Root led off with a triple to right field, before touching home on a base hit to right by Chris Borter. Later in the inning, Lucas Flemming belted a double to score both Borter and Mitchell Schroeder for the 3-0 early edge.
  • Middlebury increased its advantage to 4-0 in the second as Nathan Samii doubled to left field and touched home on a single up the middle by Root.
  • The Cardinals got one run back in their half of the inning. James Murphy ripped a base hit through the left side, before a double to right center by Jake Crantz sent Murphy across the plate to make it 4-1.
  • St. John Fisher scored four runs in the bottom of the third to rush into a 5-4 advantage. With two outs on the board, Jackson Frey walked and Brian Norsen reached on an error, before a double by Murphy sent both runners home. A base knock by Dominic Gucc scored Murphy, before Gucc crossed the plate himself on a triple from Crantz for the one-run lead.
  • In the top of the fourth, Samii walked and later touched home on a double from Root. Borter followed with a base knock to right field to score David Byrne and give the Panthers a 6-5 lead, but the Cardinals were able to end the inning with a double play to stifle Middlebury.
  • St. John Fisher would not back down, knotting the contest at six runs apiece in the bottom of the sixth. Pinch hitter Ethan Fulton and Crantz each walked before back-to-back sacrifice bunts allowed Fulton to touch home.
  • The Panthers answered, jumping in front 7-6 in the top of the eighth. With two outs on the board, Root was able to manufacture a bloop to right center, scoring Samii for the one-run edge.
  • Middlebury added another insurance run in the top of the ninth as McCausland led off with a booming home run to left for the 8-6 edge.
  • The Cardinals did not go away, leveling the contest in the bottom of the ninth. Ethan Perry opened the inning with a base hit to right and moved to second on a walk by Norsen. Murphy knocked a single up the middle to score pinch runner Noah Pohrte, before Norsen scampered across the plate to even the score at 8-8.
  • In the 10th, Zip Malley and Root opened the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third. St. John Fisher's defense managed to stop Malley from scoring on a fielder's choice by Borter, but one batter later, Root tallied the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice off the bat of McCausland to make it 9-8.
  • The Cardinals put runners on the corners in their half of the inning, but reliever Andrew Gatland worked out of the jam, striking out Nick Lemire looking to earn the save and give the Panthers a 9-8 win.
NOTES
  • With five hits today, Root ties for second in program history for hits in a single game.
  • Flemming also had a banner day, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.
  • Owen Tross got the start on the mound, tossing 8.0 innings to become the program's single-season record holder with 74.2 frames this spring.
  • With the triumph, Middlebury recorded its 31st victory of the season, which is tied for the most in a single season.
  • This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs in baseball.
  • Due to weather, the game was postponed from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. It was the only contest that was able to be played on Saturday. The remainder of the regional pod's contests will take place on Sunday and potentially on Monday depending on results.
With the victory, the Panthers advance to take on the loser of Keystone and #11 Misericordia on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. The winner of that contest will advance to the Regional Final.
