Baseball Tallies Program Record 32nd Win Before Bowing Out Of NCAA Tournament

The Middlebury baseball team downed Keystone 11-6 in a must-win contest on Sunday morning, setting a program record with its 32nd victory of the season. The Panthers saw their NCAA Tournament run come to an end in the nightcap, falling to #11 Misericordia 6-4. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS VS. KEYSTONE
  • With two outs on the board in the top of the first, Andrew Ashley blasted the ball out of the park to bring home. Lucas Flemming, Chris Borter and himself for the early 3-0 edge.
  • The Giants responded in their half of the inning when Jacob Yager homered to make it 3-1.
  • In Keystone's next at-bat, Nate Ewing led off with a single through the left side and took advantage of three Panther miscues to round the bases and slice the deficit down to one (3-2).
  • Middlebury gained some breathing room in the top of the fourth. Mitchell Schroeder was hit by a pitch and later scored on a triple to right center by Nathan Samii to make it 4-2.
  • The Giants would not go away, knotting the contest at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame. Yager stole home after reaching on a base knock through the left side earlier, before a sacrifice bunt by David Currer drove in Robert Estra.
  • The Panthers responded in the top of the fifth. Borter singled and Kyle McCausland followed with a double, before both came across the plate on a line drive single up the middle by Flemming. Later in the frame, Flemming took advantage of an error to score, before Zip Malley touched the plate on a double to left by Samii for the 8-4 lead.
  • Keystone got one run back in its half of the inning when Chase Boyle scored on a single from Darren Hagen to make it 8-5. The Giants threatened to move in front when Yager and Estra walked to load the bases, but Middlebury came up big, turning  a double play to leave all three players stranded. 
  • The Panthers increased their advantage to 10-5 in the top of the sixth inning. Root walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and slid across home on a base knock from McCausland. Later on, McCausland scored on a single by Ashley to left field. 
  • Justin Mann walked to open the bottom of the sixth and later touched the plate on a sac fly from Bobby Pokorn to slice the Middlebury lead down to four (10-6).
  • Root secured the victory for the Panthers, blasting a solo roundtripper in the eighth for the 11-6 triumph.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. MISERICORDIA
  • The hosts opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Connor Maryniak singled to left to drive in Garrett McIlhenney for the early 1-0 edge.
  • The Cougars kept their foot on the gas, increasing the advantage to 3-0 in the third when another base hit by Maryniak plated both Brock Bollinger and Jack Regenye. 
  • In the top of the fifth, Malley blooped a single to right field to send Ashley across the plate and cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • Misericordia cracked the game open in its half of the inning, extending the lead to 6-1. A base knock by Jared Hoffman to left field drove in Bollinger and Maryniak, before Jason Sanfilippo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A fielder's choice during the next at-bat allowed Joe Comins to cross the plate, but the Panthers threw Hoffman out at home to work themselves out of the jam. 
  • Middlebury got one run back in the bottom of the sixth when a single by Schroeder to deep center sent Flemming home to make it 6-2.
  • The Panthers continued their comeback bid in their next at-bat. Schroeder singled to load the bases, and Flemming scampered home to score on a wild pitch. Samii followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Ashley and slice the lead down to 6-4. That was as close as the squad would get as the Cougars tallied a pair of outs to stifle Middlebury and secure the victory. 
NOTES
  • For the second-straight year, the Panthers set a school record for the most wins in a season, eclipsing the mark from a year ago (31) with the triumph earlier in the day.
  • Middlebury made its third-consecutive and fourth overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. 
  • Root swiped three bases against the Giants, moving him into sole possession of fourth place on the Panther's single-season list with 26 this spring.
  • With one double against Keystone, McCausland moves into a four-way tie for second place on Middlebury's career list (32). He also ends the season as the program's career RBI leader with 138, including one on Sunday to conclude the year with 50 which ranks third for a year.
  • Schroeder's RBI gives him 49 this season, placing him in a tie for fourth in a single season.
  • The Panthers and the Giants played for the initial time this weekend, with each claiming one meeting.
  • Middlebury and Misericordia had not met before today. 
The Panthers conclude the season with several program and individual records.
