Panthers Fall To Giants 10-5 In NCAA Tournament Opener

The Middlebury baseball team fell behind 8-1 in the eighth inning, and were not able to recover as Keystone claimed a 10-5 victory in the first game of the NCAA Tournament. The regional round features a double-elimination format, as both teams compete again on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Beau Root led off with a double to right center and advanced on a groundout before Kyle McCausland's bloop single into the left center gap scored Root for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Giants looked to get on the board in the top of the second, putting runners on the corners, but Justin Lessing struck out the final batter to get out of the jam.
  • Keystone's Josh Parks led off the next inning with a base knock to left center, before Nate Ewing singled to right. An attempted sacrifice bunt by Justin Mann got away from the Panthers, allowing Mann to reach second and both Parks and Ewing to touch home for the 2-1 lead.
  • The Giants increased their advantage to 3-1 in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Jacob Yager doubled to left. Robert Estra followed with a single to center, and as he bolted for second, Yager scampered home to score before the Panthers threw Robert out at second to end the inning.
  • In the top of the eighth, Ewing got things going with a double to left center, allowing Keystone to explode for five runs on six hits to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
  • Middlebury mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning, cutting the deficit to three. Chris Borter, McCausland and Andrew Ashley each walked to load the bases. Borter touched the plate on a fielder's choice by Baker Angstman, before Sammy Smith blasted the ball out of the park for a three-run round-tripper to make it 8-5.
  • The Giants added a pair of insurance tallies in the top of the ninth when Mann launched a double to left field, scoring Ewing and Hunter Rauch and increasing the advantage to 10-5.
  • With their final chance at-bat, the Panthers loaded the bases with one out, but the Giants were able to turn the double play and end the inning to secure the 10-5 victory.
NOTES
  • With one run scored today, Root became the program record holder with most runs in a single-season (51).
  • Middlebury is making its third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and fourth overall.
  • The Panthers and the Giants squared off for the first time in program history.
Middlebury takes on St. John Fisher at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, with the victor advancing to a must-win contest at 3:30 p.m. Since both teams lost in the opener on Friday, the team that falls in the morning game will be eliminated from the tournament.
