#1 Women’s Lacrosse Opens NCAA Tournament With 18-5 Win Over St. John Fisher

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team began its national title defense with an 18-5 victory over St. John Fisher in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers jumped out to an early lead after just 2:45 of action. Hope Shue opened the scoring with a free-position goal before Maggie Coughlin and Sara Ellinghaus each added tallies to make it 3-0.
  • Middlebury extended its lead to 5-0 at the 9:23 mark on a pair of player-down markers by Coughlin and Kelcey Dion
  • The hosts kept their foot on the gas throughout the first quarter, finding the back of the net six more times to increase the advantage to 11-0 after one period of play and force running time. Shue highlighted the span, scoring four times.
  • The Cardinals got on the board with 2:16 elapsed in the second stanza. Ellie Leisen cut inside and fired a shot just inside the right post to bring the score to 11-1.
  • Shue answered with her sixth goal of the contest, tucking a free-position bid into the right netting to push the lead back to 11 (12-1.)
  • With 4:59 to go, Jamee Numan bounced a free-position shot past St. John Fisher goalie Emma Batko, but Sydney Carpenter responded 2:37 later, receiving a pass from Emma Biel and firing the ball into the left corner to make it 13-2.
  • The Panthers extended the lead to 14-2 with just 33 seconds remaining in the half. Ellinghaus zipped a pass to a cutting Charlotte Price who ripped her shot into the top-left corner for the 12-goal advantage at the intermission.
  • The third quarter was a low-scoring affair, with the Cardinals tallying the only two markers. Biel and Cara Landry each found the back of the net to pull St. John Fisher within 10 (14-4) heading into the final frame of action.
  • With 2:21 elapsed in the fourth, Ellinghaus netted her second goal of the day as she evaded a defender and flipped a shot into the left portion of the net.
  • At the 10:15 mark, Landry cut the deficit to 10 (15-5), but goals by Anna Spehr, Numan and a late free-position strike by Burdine Atherton gave Middlebury the 18-5 triumph.
NOTES
  • Kylie Wilson caused three turnovers in the win, giving her 83 for her career, which is tied for sixth in the program record books.
  • Shue tallied eight points during the victory, scoring six goals and adding two assists.
  • With the triumph, the Panthers have won 47-straight games and 26 in a row at Peter Kohn Field.
  • The programs played for just the second time in history with Middlebury claiming both meetings.
The Panthers will face the winner of the #25 University of Chicago and Colorado College second-round matchup in the NCAA Third Round next Saturday.
