Second-Quarter Run Leads #11 Middlebury Past SUNY Geneseo 17-10 In NCAA Second Round

The 11th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team led 7-6 late in the second quarter against SUNY Geneseo, but the Panthers rattled off four goals to end the stanza en route to a 17-10 triumph in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.  
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers grabbed the early lead just 49 seconds into the first quarter when Will Zink fired a quick-stick shot into the left side of the goal.
  • Less than three minutes later, the Knights leveled the contest at 1-1. Riley Henselder worked his way from behind the goal, bouncing a wraparound bid into the lower portion of the net.
  • Middlebury regained the advantage with 4:22 left. Tom Conley weaved through the SUNY Geneseo defense and bounced a bid through the legs of goalie Andrew Tittmann.
  • The Knights responded 36 seconds later on a quick-stick shot by William McCumisky.
  • With 2:37 remaining in the stanza, Zink found the back of the net on a nifty pass from Conley before John McCarthy fired a shot into the bottom-right corner for a 4-2 edge after one quarter of play.
  • Zink completed his hat trick 31 seconds into second-quarter action cutting through traffic for a 5-2 lead before Cole Bollin muscled in from behind the goal and tucked a shot into the right side for the Knights to make it 5-3.
  • The teams traded the next two goals as Zink scored at 12:44 and McCumisky tallied his second score for a 6-4 contest with 11:39 on the clock.
  • Russell Thorndike pushed the Middlebury lead back to three (7-4) on a rope from 20 yards out 1:41 later. 
  • SUNY Geneseo sliced the deficit to one (7-6) on goals from Brady Sullivan with 7:59 left and Ronnie Trebing while a player up at 5:38.
  • The Panthers answered with the final four goals of the frame as Patrick Jamin and Zink tallied 25 seconds apart. Thorndike earned his second tally and Zink found the back of the net for the sixth time in the half for an 11-6 halftime edge.
  • The sides traded goals in the third quarter, as each team scored twice. Bollin and McCumsiky tallied for the Knights, while Jake Peluso and McCarthy found the back of the net for Middlebury to make it a 13-8 contest headed to the final quarter.
  • Zink continued his huge day, whipping in a quick-stick tally with 11:42 left for a 14-8 advantage. 
  • Will Ford gave the Panthers a seven-goal cushion (15-8) on a left-handed bouncer from 15 yards away just 2:34 later. The sides traded the last four goals, as Middlebury eased to the 17-10 triumph.
NOTES
  • William Munroe won 16-of-28 faceoffs and scooped up 11 groundballs, giving him 299 for the season. 
  • Thorndike scored a pair of goals in the triumph and has tallied a goal in all 19 contests this spring. 
  • Zink paced the offensive output with seven goals, marking the second time in the last three games that he has posted seven or more scores.
  • Teddy Curran posted two caused turnovers giving him 29 this year. That total moves him into a tie for third in single-season history.
  • Hayden Kern was superb in the Panther goal, stopping 14 shots. He has 221 saves this season, tied for the sixth most in program history. It also marked the 13th time this season that the goalie has made double-digit saves in a game. 
  • The programs played for just the second time as Middlebury was victorious in the other meeting by a 14-5 count in the opening round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
With the victory, the Panthers advance to face #4 Dickinson on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
