The 18th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team handed #4 St. Lawrence its first loss of the season, snapping the Saint's 11-game winning streak with a 13-7 victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The first seven minutes of the contest featured a battle between goalies Hayden Kern and Michael Marinello, with neither team able to get past the netminders.
- St. Lawrence broke the draw at the 8:06 mark when Zack Corsi rifled a shot into the goal from the left side for the 1-0 edge.
- The Panthers responded with four unanswered tallies. The run was sparked by Patrick Jamin's bouncing marker with just under six minutes remaining before William Ryan recorded a scoop-and-score less than a minute later. Russell Thorndike tallied twice in the final 1:03 of action to put Middlebury up 4-1 after one quarter.
- The second stanza was a back-and-forth affair with the teams trading the first pair of goals to make it 5-2.
- With 10:46 on the clock, Will Ford found the back of the net to push the Panther lead to 6-2.
- Just over a minute later, Billy Curtis forced goalie Marinello to fail a clearing attempt, and Middlebury cashed in on the turnover, with Tom Conley sending the ball into the open goal for the 7-2 advantage.
- St. Lawrence tallied a pair of markers sandwiched around a marker from Ford, cutting the deficit to four (8-4) at the halftime break.
- The third quarter belonged to the Panthers, with Thorndike starting and capping the four-goal frenzy to increase the lead to 12-4.
- The Saints came out strong in the final frame, tallying three-conseuctive goals to slice the advantage down to five (12-7) with just four minutes to go, but it wasn't enough. Middlebury scored in the final minutes and held off St. Lawrence to secure the 13-7 victory.
NOTES
- Kern picked up his 25th career win in goal, making nine stops during the contest.
- Thorndike tallied six points (4G, 2A), which tied for a career high in a single game.
- With six groundballs today, William Munroe moves into fifth place on Middlebury's career list with 251.
- The Panthers and the Saints met for just the 20th time, with Middlebury leveling the series at 10 wins apiece.
