#18 Men’s Lacrosse Halted By #6 Tufts On Senior Day

The 18th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team fell to sixth-ranked Tufts 23-11 on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the contest, the Panthers honored seniors Tom Conley, Will Zink, William Ryan, Evan Park, Luke Simpson, Matt Dailey, Brendan Easter, Jake Peluso, Graves Thomas, Pete Steinle and Jimmy Cosolito for their contributions to the program.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Jumbos broke away early, recording the first eight goals of the contest, while shutting out the Panthers in the opening quarter to take an 8-0 lead into the second stanza.
  • Middlebury cut the deficit to six (8-2) on a pair of nifty close-range goals by Billy Curtis over the first 2:37 of the second frame.
  • Tufts' Max Ettinghausen answered with two tallies of his own to push the advantage back to eight (10-2) with 8:39 remaining.
  • With 5:16 to go, Logan White cut inside from the right and uncorked a shot into the upper corner to make it 10-3.
  • On the ensuing faceoff, Victor Salcedo won the ball and raced upfield before tucking his shot past goalie Hayden Kern to restore the Jumbos' eight goal lead (11-3) at the half.
  • Tufts began the third quarter with a marker after 3:12 of action, but Middlebury answered just over a minute later as Jake Peluso found Curtis, who fired a turnaround shot into the far corner to make it 12-4.
  • The hosts continued to chip away at the Jumbo's lead just over a minute later. John McCarthy found Russell Thorndike who rifled a shot into the lower-right corner, but Ettinghausen completed his hat trick with 4:28 remaining to push the Tufts' lead back to eight (13-5).
  • The Panthers closed the third stanza with a pair of wonderful tallies. With 3:29 left, a pass towards the crease by Thorndike found Ryan, who flipped a no-look shot into the net. Henry Tarr followed 33 seconds later by bursting through the defense and ripping a long-pole goal past Jumbo goalie Connor Garzone to pull to within six (13-7).
  • The visitors closed the quarter by scoring twice sandwiched around a tally from Cooper DeMallie to take a 15-8 advantage into the final frame.
  • Middlebury cut the deficit to six on two occasions in the fourth quarter, but were unable to mount a comeback, as Tufts pulled away late for the 23-11 win.
NOTES
  • With four goals today, Curtis has now tallied at least two points in his last 13 games.
  • Kern made 13 saves in between the pipes during the contest.
  • The programs played for the 61st time with Middlebury holding a narrow 33-27-1 advantage in the all-time series.
