Panthers Complete Sweep Of Bowdoin With 18-11 Victory

The Middlebury baseball team completed a three-game sweep over Bowdoin, claiming an 18-11 victory on Sunday afternoon following 17-3 and 10-2 triumphs on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame. Chris Borter singled and Mitchell Schroeder doubled into the gap in left-center to put runners on second and third. Kyle McCausland followed with a homer to left to drive in all three runners.
  • The Polar Bears pulled to within one in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Chris Dirks roped a double into the right field corner to plate two and make it 3-2.
  • Middlebury responded with eight runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI base hit from Nathan Samii and a run-scoring single by David Byrne for a 10-2 advantage.
  • In the fourth, Bowdoin answered with a two-run round-tripper to left-center by Ben McKenzie to cut the deficit to six (10-4).
  • The Panthers continued to pull away in the fifth, tacking on five more tallies to extend the lead to 15-4. The inning was highlighted by a two-run blast from Sammy Smith, who sent the ball over the wall in left.
  • The visitors added a fifth run in the top of the sixth inning on a fielder's choice to make it 15-5, before Luke Chessie launched a two-run homer to left to move within eight (15-7) two innings later.
  • Middlebury sealed the win with three runs in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Zip Malley ripped a single down the right field line to score Andrew Pellagrini. Will Ashley scampered home on a wild pitch before a double off the left field wall by Isaac Rosario scored Malley and gave the hosts an 11-run advantage (18-7).
  • The Polar Bears answered with four runs in the top of the ninth, as McKenzie hit his second home run of the game, but it was not enough as the Panthers held on for the 18-11 victory.
NOTES
  • With four RBIs during the win, McCausland moves into fourth place in program history with 102 runs batted in.
  • Borter was a perfect three-for-three at the plate during the triumph.
  • Sawyer Duarte picked up his first win of the season on the mound, striking out five and allowing just five hits over five innings of work.
