Schroeder’s Sensational Day Highlights Pair of Wins Over Bowdoin

The Middlebury baseball team scored 27 runs and tallied 31 hits, including six home runs to earn 17-3 and 10-2 victories over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon. Mitchell Schroeder led the way for the Panthers, going 4-for-5 at the plate and recording 12 RBIs and two grand slams across both contests.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Baker Angstman roped a single to right field before David Byrne launched a two-run homer to right-center to make it 2-0.
  • Middlebury continued to tack on runs during the two-out rally. With the bases loaded, Schroeder crushed a grand slam to deep left to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead. Kyle McCausland was next up and wasted no time, taking the first pitch that he saw over fence in left to extend the Middlebury advantage to seven (7-0). The hosts closed the inning by adding an eighth run as Nathan Samii crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
  • The Panthers continued to pull away in the third. Doubles by Chris Borter and Byrne along with another round-tripper from Schroeder gave the hosts a 14-0 advantage in the third inning.
  • The Polar Bears got on the board in the top of the fourth on a three-run homer to right center by Chris Dirks to make it 14-3.
  • Middlebury answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and two more in the fifth for the 17-3 triumph.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers grabbed a 1-0 edge in the first on a sacrifice fly by McCausland.
  • Middlebury broke the game open in the second inning, scoring six runs. With runners on second and third, Andrew Ashley sent a double to right which plated Angstman and Joe Basso. Later in the frame, with the bases loaded, Schroeder tallied his second grand slam of the afternoon to make it 7-0.
  • The hosts continued to increase their advantage in the fourth, with a homer from Parker and a double by Borter driving in two more runs for the 9-0 lead. The Panthers moved ahead by double-digits (10-0) in the bottom of the sixth when a single to right by McCausland drove in Zip Malley.
  • Bowdoin spoiled the shutout with two runs in the final frame as Aiden Carey doubled off the center field wall to bring in Cal Thompson and Will Bordes, but it was not enough as Middlebury recorded the final three outs for the 10-2 victory.
NOTES
  • Schroeder's seven runs batted in and two home runs during the opening contest both tie for the third-most in a single game in Middlebury history. The Panther also surpassed the 100 career hits mark, reaching 102 with four blasts in today's action.
  • With a home run today, McCausland has now recorded 17 round-trippers in his career, which is second-most in program history.
  • On the mound, Owen Tross went five innings in game one, striking out five hitters en route to his third win of the season. In the second matchup, Justin Lessing threw six shutout innings, while fanning seven batters.
  • Byrne was superb in the first contest, going 3-for-4 at the dish, while driving in four runs and scoring twice, while Lucas Cai went 4-for-5 and scored two runs.
  • The programs met for the 38th and 39th times, with Middlebury owning a 25-14 advantage in the series.
The Panthers complete their three-game set with the Polar Bears on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
