Middlebury Walks It Off In 11th Inning To Complete 4-3 Comeback Over Skidmore

The Middlebury baseball team fell behind 3-0 early, but came back to top Skidmore with a walk-off in the bottom of the 11th inning. The victory was the 25th of the season, and marked the regular-season finale.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • With two outs in the top of the third, the Thoroughbreds tried to get things going. Jaden Torrado singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Trey Bourque followed with a walk, but the Panthers recorded the final out to keep Skidmore off the scoreboard.
  • Back-to-back bases on balls and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for the Thoroughbreds in the top of the fourth. One batter later, a single through the right side by Grayden Harris allowed Nick Duryea to touch the plate, before Peter Martin's fielder's choice sent Ewen Donald home for the 2-0 edge.
  • Skidmore increased its lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth, with Brad Garrity tallying an unearned run after a series of Panther miscues.
  • Middlebury took advantage of several Thoroughbred errors in its half of the inning. Zip Malley scored on a miscue by the catcher before Sammy Smith took advantage of an error to scamper home. Later in the inning, pinch-hitter Kyle McCausland lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive Chris Borter in and knot the contest 3-3.
  • The Panthers looked to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Baker Angstman singled up the middle and Nathan Samii was hit by a pitch. Later, a flyout by Malley sent Angstman to third, before Samii stole second. The Thoroughbreds would not go away, and with two outs on the board, a diving catch by center fielder Torrado ended the inning to deny Middlebury a score and keep the contest deadlocked.
  • Skidmore looked destined to put the game away in the top of the ninth. Torrado singled to right center, Bourque walked, and Zachary Leiderman singled to load the bases, but Middlebury recorded two straight outs to leave all three Thoroughbreds stranded.
  • As the darkness loomed and the rain started coming down hard, the game went all the way to the bottom of the 11th inning. With one out and a runner on first, Beau Root blasted a double just inside the center field fence, sending Gus Parker home for the 4-3 win.
NOTES
  • This marked the third-straight season and fifth time in program history that the Panthers have eclipsed the 25-triumphs plateau. The victory was also the seventh-straight for Middlebury.
  • The meeting was the 35th between the programs, with the Panthers claiming their 25th victory over the Thoroughbreds.
Middlebury returns to Forbes Field on Saturday, hosting Trinity in doubleheader action to kick off a best-of-three NESCAC Quarterfinal weekend.
