The Middlebury baseball team rallied past Trinity 6-5 in extra innings during the opening game of the NESCAC Quarterfinal's best-of-three series before falling 5-4 in 10 innings in the nightcap. The teams will square off Sunday morning with a trip to the NESCAC Championship weekend on the line.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers moved into the lead in the third. With the bases loaded, Kyle McCausland came up clutch, knocking a single through the right side to plate Zip Malley and Sammy Smith for a 2-0 edge.
  • The Bantams threatened in the fifth as they loaded the bases with a pair of walks sandwiched around a base hit, but Panther pitcher Justin Lessing got out of the jam, inducing a groundout to shortstop to preserve the Middlebury lead.
  • Trinity jumped in front in the seventh. Aidan Stern singled and Dylan Schnitzer reached on a Panther miscue before Sean Meth lifted a home run to left center to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage.
  • The hosts tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a two-out rally. Beau Root singled through the right side before stealing second and third. Chris Borter was hit by a pitch and swiped second to put two runners in scoring positions. McCausland rolled a ground ball to shortstop, but an errant throw allowed everyone to reach safely and Root to come home, making it 3-3.
  • The Bantams restored its edge in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Tanner Fairchild and a double-steal that allowed Fairchild to cross home plate for the 5-3 advantage.
  • Middlebury pulled back within one (5-4) in the bottom of the inning whenLucas Flemming ripped a pinch-hit line drive to center to score Andrew Ashley.
  • The Panthers knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth. McCausland led off with a walk followed by a single from Mitchell Schroeder. Baker Angstman loaded the bases with a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly by Ashley evened the contest.
  • In the bottom of the 10th with two outs and a 3-1 count, McCausland blasted a solo home run just over the outstretched glove of Trinity center fielder William Sawyer to give the hosts a 6-5 victory.
